The correct notation for this auction is:

1♦-(1♠)-p-(3♠)
4♣-(p)-??

The parentheses indicate opponent bidding. Also, the dealer is already indicated in the hand diagram, so the directions don't need to be repeated in the auction. Posting like this makes it a lot easier for everyone to read.

5♦ seems reasonable. Partner has bid to the four level by himself, vulnerable. x x AKxxxx AQJxx or x xx AKQxx AQJxx isn't much to ask for.

4♦ is a huge silly underbid. Partner needs 1165 with AQ AQ to make game fair, and his hand could easily be better (0265 for example). Clear 5♦.

Of course 5♦ can easily go down (x x KQxxxx AQJxx is a clear 4♣ bid IMO, you want partner to save over 4♠ on any excuse) but I think we just have to bid it.

Since the Proprieties were made part of the Laws of Bridge (as opposed to merely an adjunct), I believe that any hairsplitting defence of the sort of conduct which Mikeh relates as occurring, becomes all but defunct.

As for the conduct/advice allegedly espoused in the book, that does not merely offend my sensibilities but offends against the proprieties and hence the Laws of the game as well.

I do not know whether the protagonist in Mikeh's account is a professional, but for anyone else the inherent joy and charm of the game should be sufficient that "use any means to win" is simply neither an option nor considered.

Pity there is not the equivalent regard to the proprieties as there is to the Rules of Golf in that game where the concept of calling penalties on yourself is ensconced (and golf professionals play for far greater stakes than any bridge professionals)!
