(1) P (1) 1nt

I've just had an expert pickup partner teach me about 1nt bids here :D
What would you say?

natural...15-17 is a little weak though, think more like 16-18

Experts play it as natural, and "experts" as takeout.

The meaning of the bid is whatever you agree it to mean. I like playing it as a 15-18 NT hand, as I feel that I don't need 3 ways to ask partner to bid a major (takeout double, michaels cue-bid, and potential sandwich no trump).

W/O an agreement it is natural, I know it as 16-18.

There is a reason to play 1 NT as 5/4 9in the unbid suits after (1m) pass (1M).
And you may agree to play the same way after 1 pass 1 just to have less to remember.
But besides this memory effect, there is NO good reason to (ab)use 1 NT in this way.
Kind Regards

Strong and balanced for me.

Playing this as two-suited works best against players that don't open and respond light.

My p had this hand for his 1nt overcall: Axxxx,KQxxx, xx, K

When I asked about his bid he assured me all real experts would know this bid :)

Another odd 1nt I had earlier;
I doubled in 4th pos with 16count and 44 majors.

my p had Kxx,xxxx,Qxxx,xx for his 1nt

In a way he was right.
All experts know this bid.
But no expert use it.

With everyone opening on 9-some-odd HCP these days and responders doing their responding with 1 HCP plus or minus a few it's critical to have this bid be natural.

If I'm playing Al Roth maybe I'll reconsider.

The standard meaning is that is shows a strong notrump. Perhaps the range should be more like 16-19 rather than 15-17.

Certainly there are some folks who play it as major-suit takeout, in which case it is usually agreed as showing 5+/4+ and something like 8-12 high (strong hands double). But this is not standard and I would not assume it without discussion except by a passed hand since then a strong notrump is impossible.
