Scoring: IMP

What would be your favorite auction with these two hands?
Please note: I am interested in boring, bog standard, 2/1.

3N all pass.

Oh, you meant my favorite realistic auction. 1-2-2-4. I really don't think I would find 3NT here. Maybe if north rebids 2NT and then either (a) passes a raise to 3NT or (be) rebids 3NT (!) over 3 then it would happen. I really don't see that happening with J9x.

This is from partnership bidding, Han and I got to 3N on a semi-natural auction. Can you guess it? Only widely used gadgets came up.

The only way I could ever get to 3NT is for North to screw around and for South to gamble. Something like 1-P-2-P-2-P-2NT-P-3NT.

In real life, 4♠-1.

1NT - 3NT

OK, just kidding. I would always bid to 4.
That's impossible. No one can give more than one hundred percent. By definition that is the most anyone can give.

1 3NT * 13-15 balanced with three spades NF
Pass!!!

Pass is certainly tempting but I am not completely sure I would find it.

If I did then it would be my favourite auction with these cards.

I'd get to 4 with every partner with whom I play, and I would expect 45% mp score and a push in any imp match... except against Han and cherdano, of course :)

It seems very difficult to construct an auction that reaches 3NT on these hands but not on responder hands like:

KJx
xxx
AQ
K98xx

KJx
Jx
AQx
K98xx

opposite the same hand for opener. Note that on these hands 3NT is off (at least) the first five tricks whereas 4 is on the club finesse.

Perhaps this is worth a shot:

1 - 2
2(1) - 2(2)
2NT(3) - 3(4)
3NT(5) - Pass

(1) Any minimum hand
(2) GF spade agreement
(3) Good spades
(4) Diamond control
(5) No heart control, no club control, suggest playing 3NT

So, one advantage of playing relay is that you can give partner a bidding problem knowing both hands yourself.

So playing with Jason, we bid:

1(1) - 1NT(GF ®)
2(2) - 2®
3(3) - 3(min/max?)
3(min) - 4

(1) 10-15, 5+
(2) Single-suited spades, unbal (with the obvious exception)
(3) 7=2=2=2 exactly

So didn't get to the magic 3NT in the end.

Edit: Partner was concerned about AQxxxxx xx Kx Kx and felt 3NT was too swingy.
