My quick and nasty simulation suggested that we will make 8 or fewer tricks around half of the time.

Similarly the opponents will make game more than half of the time.

It looks like our best chance is to bid 4 and hope that they
  • Get to the wrong game
  • Miss slam
  • Partner can dive

So I am revising my opinion downwards to 4 from 5.

There is no x over 1. I would simply overcall 1 and over

1) 4-x as negative showing remaining suits

2)5-x for penalties
