My quick and nasty simulation suggested that we will make 8 or fewer tricks around half of the time.

Similarly the opponents will make game more than half of the time.

It looks like our best chance is to bid 4♦ and hope that they
  • Get to the wrong game
  • Miss slam
  • Partner can dive

So I am revising my opinion downwards to 4♦ from 5♦.

There is no x over 1♦. I would simply overcall 1♠ and over

1) 4♦-x as negative showing remaining suits

2)5♦-x for penalties
