Raise to game. Partner needs two first round controls for slam to be making, which is hugely unlikely.

Personally, I'd bid 4♠

1. Partner just opened 3♠ vulnerable in second seat on a real crappy Spade suit. Simply put, I don't have enough confidence in his bidding to risk trying for slam.

2. In order to have a good shot a slam partner needs to table a pair of bullets and a 7 card Spade suit. It might happen, but it feels like I'm shooting at a real small target.

3. Even if partner does put down a seven card Spade suit with two Aces, we still might have some issues in 6♠. If partner has the Ace of Clubs and opening heart lead could be a pisser. If partner has the Ace of Hearts than we almost certainly have two fast Club losers.

If I decided that I was desperate for a big swing I might just punt a 6NT bid...

I can see this working some percentage of the time

4♠. Slam isn't even on the radar screen.

On a really bad day, 4♠ could go -1 or -2.

I agree with Phil. There is no guarantee that 4♠ will make. I would say that you will make less than 10 tricks 10% of the time, and that slam will be cold less than 5% of the time - partner needs the ♠A, first round heart control and second round club control for slam to be cold. Is it possible? Sure. But not likely. For example, partner could have:

AT9xxxx
----
xxx
Kxx

Even this hand does not make slam 100%, but I will take my chances.

Only -2?
3S P 4S all pass

The defence start with 3 rounds of hearts followed by three rounds of clubs.

(OK, it's not much of a second seat 3S opening, and it's a bit of a Friday afternoon fantasy)

Agree with all the other 4♠ bidders, that we should be in a slam really wouldn't cross my mind.

It's not the fact we need 2 aces, it's that we need 2 specific aces as well as the ace we are missing onside (unless we are lucky enough to catch some useful singleton). No thanks.

Now if I had a stiff club...

Try to find any of the Rosenkraz book. There is structure for responding to preempts where a 4 level bids ask for a control, the preemptor if having the control make a keycard responses. This is a killer tool both for imps & for MP. This hand is the perfect hand for it. You will bid slam if the side card is the A of clubs or the A of H and a stiff clubs wich isnt unlikely at all. Those who think AJxxxxx and no side card is a 2nd seat red preempt are playing too much MP and not enough imps. Red 3 level preempt 2nd seat should be more often 5 losers then 6 losers.

so over 4C

my preffered responses are

4D 1 + control but no card
4H 1+ control + card (only if we have the space)
4S no C control or 0 keycard
4Nt 2+control
5C 2+Q + control
From Psych "I mean, Gus and I never see eye-to-eye on work stuff.
For instance, he doesn't like being used as a human shield when we're being shot at.
I happen to think it's a very noble way to meet one's maker, especially for a guy like him.
Bottom line is we never let that difference of opinion interfere with anything."

Hi,

depends on the style of a 3S opening bid, but 4S
seems enough.

If it promises at most -2, than you have 4-5
tricks for partner, that means slam will
be at best 50%.
If it promises at most -3, than you may or
may not make 5S.

If you have other agreements, ...

Know your partnershi style, and you can answer
your question yourself, if you dont know him,
nobody can.

With kind regards
Marlowe
