Han is correct.
From HANP, I would play the P, but from HAN I would have to decide if I can afford the H or the A, and might even have to play the N.

Agree. By playing the N from HANP, partner might think you were playing the N from NOP instead because he cannot see the O.

I play standard count, but I think the principle is the same: always make the clearest signal you can, which in this case means playing the lowest card.
It is useful to have an agreement with partner about what you do on the second round if there is some chance of him confusing two with four (if he knows you have four the second card is suit pref).
