I believe that the USA currently hold only the World Championship For People Who Still Bid Like Your Auntie Gladys - dburn
dunno how to play 4 card majors - JLOGIC
True but I know Standard American and what better reason could I have for playing Precision? - Hideous Hog

Yes, pass is to play in balancing seat. Good system.
But seriously, if this is not even close to 1NT, would you ever bid 1NT with a passed hand, then?

I pass. Wouldn't be the first time that opener doubles next to show that his ♣ was short...
Anyway after a possibly 3-card opening, a passed hand natural 1NT does not seem very useful.

This pipless, shapeless hand is a long way from being a maximum for an initial pass. You could make it much better without changing the high card content - xx J10xx A98x AJ10 has the same 10 points, but is worth about a trick more. (You might choose not to balance because of the spade shortage, but that's another matter.)

Echo this. Considering you can be 4333 and a 12 count and passed initially, there's plenty of room for a 1N call.

I certainly wouldn't argue with a pass, however. But if you are going to take an aggressive view, why not double?
