I didn't intend any moral. I was just curious what people would do in a serious game, and then I thought I should tell when I had the hand and what happened.

But seriously, if this is not even close to 1NT, would you ever bid 1NT with a passed hand, then?
Rarely.
If the most partner can have is around 13/14 otherwise she might overcall 1NT or find and offshape double. Then there is not much gain from balancing and there is a big downside. You might suffer a big penalty and they might even have a game.

Is the question "is balance a long-term winner?" Pass for me.
Or "would I resist some fun with this hand?" 1H to see who gets this right.

If partner can't overcall and RHO can't respond, then LHO probably has a hand he was planning on jump shifting. Why give him the opportunity now, possibly catching his partner with a fit and making game?
