what hand would you bid this unfavorable at MP's? is this even a possible sequence? et cetera.

i think i perpetrated something like this fairly recently; it wasn't a success.
probably a hand with scattered club honors and four hearts. something like 2434 or 2425, fishing for a fit with partner. it might also be a hand with 5 unbiddable hearts (6xxxx, for example) that believes his side has half the points.
given that lho might not have denied a 4 card major with his rebid, this might not be the brightest of ideas.

I've seen people doing this over and over again and getting away with it much more often that they should...
Usually it's a natural hand with bad 5 card broken suit which somehow finds pard with 4 card fit to the AK. Go figure.

A hand that you judged to be not worth a 1♥ overcall but that has some values and is unwilling to sell out to 2♦.
Quite frankly, that is a tall order. It is very risky to come in to this auction. Most things that can happen after the 2♥ call are bad:
1) Opps get another opportunity to bid the game that they missed.
2) Opps let you play in 2♥ when neither side can make anything.
3) RHO is 2-4-6-1 and hits 2♥.
Sometimes nothing bad happens, but nothing good happens, either:
1) Opps bid to 3♦ making.
2) You go down 100 when they were making 90 or 110.
Only occasionally do both sides make something and you either go plus in 2♥ or they bid on to go down in 3♦.
Given that it is VERY unlikely that your side has a game on this auction, the risks of bidding 2♥ here far outweigh the benefits.
It is like Vince Lombardi said about passing (I think it was Vince Lombardi). When you pass the ball, three things can happen, and two of them are bad.

4 hearts and a hand that couldn't act over 1♣. By the way in my games, both opponents have denied 4 hearts.
I wouldn't call this a common auction but it's not exactly rare either, particularly at MPs.

I cannot imagine bidding like this with 5+♥. I'd overcall 1♥ on anything ever worth showing.

Hmm...maybe AKx xxxxxx xx xx or similar; I wouldn't overcall or jump overcall with that hand, but might not want to sell out to 2♦. Probably shouldn't bid but might be tempted.

I cannot think of any hand with which I would bid like this.
Please note: I am interested in boring, bog standard, 2/1.
