Do you play a 2/1 after an overcall as promising a rebid?

What is standard?

What is your experience with what works best? (No proofs needed)

I have no idea what is best. I tried negative free bids for a while but did not like them. However, that was years ago. I think that standard is just like SAYC, meaning 10+ or so.
"Gibberish in, gibberish out. A trial judge, three sets of lawyers, and now three appellate judges cannot agree on what this law means. And we ask police officers, prosecutors, defense lawyers, and citizens to enforce or abide by it? The legislature continues to write unreadable statutes. Gibberish should not be enforced as law."

Lawrence standard is:
1)Responder can pass when the opponents compete and opener doesn't rebid.
2) Responder can pass when opener rebids 2nt.
3) Responder can pass when opener raises responder's suit.
4) Responder can pass when opener rebids his suit.

I play NFB and think both styles have plus and minus points.
In practice it seems NFB's work fine the vast majority of the time, perhaps less so in theory.

I think the vast majority of WC players who play 2/1 do not play NFB.
I think many strong clubbers may.

Just to clarify, I wasn't discussing negative free bids.

I mean a 2/1 that forces one round.

#1 no, I play NFB
#2 depends where you live, living in germany
NFB used to be standard, but now the tide
seems to be turning
I started playing NFB, because someone asked
me to do it, shortly afterwards the guy dropped
NFBs, I guess, if I drop NFBs the tide will change
again
In germany, if you play, that a new suit at the 2
level is forcing, than standard is to play it just as
a one round force
#3 forcing for one round is certainly easier as NFBs,
playing MP NFBs are most likely better, playing
IMPs 2/1 forcing for one round should be better

similar forcing and promising another bid is easier
than forcing for one round, and I would also think,
that forcing for one round is more MP oriented, than
the other style.

My preference is:

(1) If opener rebids notrump at any level, it is not forcing.
(2) If opener names a new suit (the 4th suit) it is always a one-round force.
(3) If opener cuebids, it is always a game force.
(4) If opener rebids his suit, it is forcing one round only if below the level of cuebid.
(5) If opener raises, it is not forcing (and it's above the cuebid).
(6) Only cuebidding, jumping, or reversing guarantee extras.

So for example:

1♣ - 1♠ - 2♥ - P and:

2♠ establishes a game force
2NT is natural and NF
3♣ and 3♥ are natural and NF
3♦ is a GF reverse

1♠ - 2♣ - 2♦ - P and:

2♥ and 2♠ are a one-round force; 2♠ can be a "punt"
2NT is natural and NF
3♣ establishes a GF, usually a diamond raise or big balanced hand
3♦ is NF
3♥ and 3♠ are forcing to game

1♣ - 1♥ - 2♦ - P and:

2♥ establishes a GF
2♠ is natural and forcing, but not necessarily a "reverse" (since not past 3♣)
2NT and 3♣ and 3♦ are NF

I really think that NFBs are standard now with a pcik up pd in the MBC.

If you play them as forcing, they surely do NOT promise a rebid, so 2 NT, a single raise or 2 of the opened suit is NF. But a jump, a new suit or the cuebid from pd are forcing.

good grief really....I hope you are wrong..really wrong...I assume you are very wrong.

if not I hope mbc knows nfb are alerts..or do they all assume no alert but standard in mbc...this seems insane logic.......

I hope I play Lawrence's style as described by Mike777 but haven't discussed it it any partnership. With one p I play NFB, though.

No.

What is standard?

Who knows? But as I play in a country where it doesn't promise a rebid in an uncontested auction, for me that is standard.

I don't think totally non-forcing works for 'undisturbed' 2/1s, it puts too much pressure on the double.

Not promising a rebid seems to work perfectly well. But then it does in an uncontested auction as well...

I can't tell you what a pick up partner in MBC plays... but the ONLY pair I know who play NFBs in an undisturbed auction play Precision. Evenryone else plays them as forcing.

So you know one pair more then I do that play NFB in an undisturbed auction.

This is quite interessting, but I read Echognomes "overcall" as if the opps actually did disturb the auction, so I did not say anything about an undisturbed auction.
But maybe the title "2/1 in competition" influenced me even more.
Kind Regards

NFB in an undisturbed auction? Sounds like an oxymoron to me. I must be misinterpreting the word "undisturbed".
