Perhaps I'm repeating myself, but how can north bid keycard over 3♦ when south could have terrible trumps? 5♠ could be down in the trump suit alone if there are bad breaks, for all north knows.
Please let me know about any questions or interest or bug reports about GIB.

Maybe. But odds are South has hcp in his long suits.

In any case, the way the auction progressed, with no heart cue over dbl (no heart wastage, thus) reinforces the tendency to strong trumps and gives North an easy 4NT.

To me it does not show a 6th spade at all, it is rather saying "oh boy I am REALLY minimum for all the slam tries i made earlier".

the words "slam tries" and "really minimum" are an oxymoron

I think the problem with south is he assumed 4♣ denied heart control.

And in fact if 3♦ is a cue, 4♣ denies heart control, so 4♠ is a perfect bid. And 4♣ is the problem.

Agreeing that 4 Spade was no good bid, I had never considered to pass this, so I agree with Nick that that was the worst bid.

If my pd denies Club control and heart control with 4 Spade, he has at most qjxx,Ax,QJ outside trumps. But with no more King or ace he had hardly make any move above my 2 Spade bid besides 4 Spade, so he must have some nice Spade honours and the 5. level is safe.
Kind Regards

Roland
