Scoring: IMP

What would you bid on this hand on the following auctions:
[3H] ?
[3H] P P ?
[4H] ?
[4H] P P ?

Would vulnerability affect your choice?

If you double in the pass out seat, would you bid spades if LHOs pre-empts are known to be sound.

I bid 3S automatically over either 3H preempt.

Over 4H, I pass both times, but I feel dirty about it.

I bid spades at the three level and double at the four level.

I agree. Though I found double tempting after 3 P P since partner might be waiting over the bidder.

Sorry Phil, I really hate 4 over 4, it's just too high a level to not choose your more flexible option. Who knows maybe others agree with you though.

3 for sure over the 3 preempt but I'll double the 4 preempt as I prefer to have a bit better prospects for 4 which is also certainly easier and less risky for the opps to whack. I have too much to pass the 4 preempt, IMHO.

I agree. The spade quality is critical. I would not give up hope opposite a stiff, and a nice stiff would be even better.

Yeah, who would want to defend 4X if partner had a stiff spade....

I'm more concerned about when partner has Jx or Kx and we are in a minor or something.

I dont have strong feelings about 4S versus double.

4S tends to find the good 5-2 or 5-3 game. Even a 5-4 game can be a problem since pard will often leave in a double with a semi balanced hand.

The double will net us a nice penalty when we dont have game, but I dont think theres any other benefit.

I have no strong feelings on 3S vs double (I would X), but doubling 4H looks clear to me.

3S over 3H,

after 4H ... i pass. X is tempting but i find the hand too light. Bidding 4S is simply bad imho.

after 4H p,p im strong enough to X.
From Psych "I mean, Gus and I never see eye-to-eye on work stuff.
For instance, he doesn't like being used as a human shield when we're being shot at.
I happen to think it's a very noble way to meet one's maker, especially for a guy like him.
Bottom line is we never let that difference of opinion interfere with anything."

I pass both in direct seat, reopen with 3 and double.

3S over 3H and double over 4H.

I need to do something, otherwise we prove the value of bidding 4H with any excuse. Don't like ignoring a five card spade suit, but I'm not unilaterally bidding 4S on this.

Bid at the 3 level, and X at the 4 level, like most people.

Bidding at the 4 level is too committal, but it is not ridiculous, and could work.
Likewise, doubling at the 3 level is likely to miss a fit, but it too is not crazy and could work.

But passing in the direct seat, with a singleton and such a good hand is losing bridge.
That's impossible. No one can give more than one hundred percent. By definition that is the most anyone can give.

What about when it's right to play in 5m rather than 4?
