Inexplicable. If you insist on bidding, 2♠ is the only rational choice.

I don't like the double, but those who give it a five haven't seen many sick bids imo.
Please note: I am interested in boring, bog standard, 2/1.

More data required. What could I have bid over 1NT? More importantly, what would partner's double of 2D have meant?

It's not that I would actually double - I would not, preferring 2S at the form of scoring and the vulnerability. But double could barely work in more than one way - if partner passes, that's good because we'll beat them 200 or more; if he has a fair hand with short spades and nine cards in the minors, that's also good because we might play a better partial than we would if I had bid 2S.

All of which means that double is not totally sick. But 4 is not enough. Put me down for 4.8.

2♠ would have been "natural constructive". Double of 2♦ would have been lead directional (I know some people play it as strong NT or whatever-we don't).

Dbl is ok but is a rather risky bid. LHO is in excellent shape to know what to do. A direct 2♠ would be much more effective.

Still, if you want to bid now (not 1st round), I think dbl is much more consistent than bidding 2♠.. lol.

:P "4" 2♠ or Pass are both better bids, the choice depending on table feel and the state of the match. Double is pretty sick, but I can think of sicker ones, like 3♥ or 3♣. My ex-partner, Odus Toole, used to favor bids like 2♠ right up to the night I killed him for it.

Well, I for one think 2♠ is totally out of order. Why? If you wanna bid spades, you should have bid it the round before. It is way, WAY more dangerous to bid it now, AFTER opps exchanged all the info they needed.

What kind of direct action scheme prevents this hand from 2S direct?
And how does that scheme hope to win now? 2S? X? Both fail for direct action, so what are they now?

I voted for "2" because although "not my choice" I don't think it is not very crazy. Maybe I'm used to more abuse than others.

The delayed 2♠ must show tolerance for some other suit because a direct 2♠ obviously wasn't clear-cut. Anyway, I prefer dbl because it shows tolerance for all suits.
