This may seem trivial, but it is enough for miunderstanding. I would be interested in more opinions.
You have this hand
♠QJxxx
♥x
♦Jxxx
♣Qxx
You hear this auction
RHO You LHO partner
1NT Pass 2♦* Pass
2♥ ???
My question is, do you balance
1) Would you dbl for takout?
2) Would you consider bidding 2S and if you think its better then dbl?
3) Do you think you need more values to dbl for takout in direct seat?
4) Clear pass, WTP??
Oh, by the way, scoring is matchpoints and you are non vul - vs vul
Cheers

Seems to me that there are easier and cleaner ways to commit suicide.

Agree. Maybe partner will kill me before I kill myself...it's a race

4).
This isn't a 'balance', it's entering into a live auction.
p.s. I assume this is a strong NT; against a (super)weak NT sometimes you have to bid here, it's one of the advantages of the method - although not on this pile of rubbish. I think it was Mickyb's team we took for an 1100 penalty in the English trials when they felt obliged to pre-balance in this position at red against our mini.

Agree with Frances -- this is a live auction. I would not bid here. If actually in balancing seat (2♥-pass-pass) then I would bid 2♠. I think 2♠ is better than double if forced to bid.

You have 6 hcp, declarer has 16 or so, responder has maybe 5. That gives your partner a full opener. So I think 2♠ has hope in balancing seat. Give me all the 10s, and I'd bid 2♠. As it is, I don't have the guts. Maybe I should. Partner will strangle me if he has 5 good hearts and I pull it.
