Scoring: IMP

1*-2**-p***-2
p-2-p-p
X-3-4-4
X-end

*=15+
**=suction
***=double would have been card showing, bids would have been natural NF

This was not a good result. What went wrong here? What should opener's two doubles mean?
... and I can prove it with my usual, flawless logic.

S's first double is t/o so that was a good bid.

I suppose the second double is action or optional or dsip or something like that. I think his first double showed what he had so he should just pass.

N's decision to pass did not work and it's not that the layout is unexpected so probably it was the wrong decision. But I'm sure I would have done the same.

South shouldn't Dbl the 2nd time with a marginal hand. Not sure if anyone should takeout to 5red though, even on this relatively harmless EW auction.

North had two chances to make a call - over 2 and over 2. South's black suit honors are relatively worthless on the bidding, and can suspect a layout like this. He has an effective 9 count.

I sympathize with the result, but I think South should sell out to 2.

For south:

With 1 you showed 15+ with the singelton king you are quite optimistic to give the hand so much value, but okay.

With your double you show short spades and all other suits.

So after this X you had sung your song, no need to sing again. Nothing positive to add, so pass and stay quite.

Whether or not north should bid 5 Heart after 4 Spade is passed to him is another piece of cake, but souths double was outlandish
Kind Regards

South really was having a bad day here.

I don't open South's hand a forcing club. It's a maximum, LIMITED, 2 suiter. 1D/H please (opening a heart in canape leads to an interesting auction).

Once they've decided to open it that way, the club holding is no longer attractive. You've already marked your hand and pard couldn't make a peep. Don't give them a free game they can't find on their own. Swish.

I really don't understand why south thought he had to double twice. The first doulbe was borderline, but acceptable.

All are commenting the NS bidding. I don't like east's bidding - to me it's obvious to raise 2 to 3 with double support - constructive if partner's got somethin, else preemptive. West would then bid the game whatever south bids over 3 (pass should be obvious).
Kind regards,
Harald

Hmm, I don't know Harald. You are 4333 with most of your stuff in the red suits. My partner probably already stuck out his neck bidding 2D, I would pass now.
Please note: I am interested in boring, bog standard, 2/1.

The first X is fine, the second X is terrible. South doesn't have a X of 6S.
