Scoring: IMP

1-(2)-?

Would you raise to 3H or pass first time. If you passed, partner doubled at balancing seat, Would to jump to 4H?

I would have bid because I'm short in spades.

If pard has some extras and spades, he might pass out 2 fearing a minor 2-suiter with me. I don't have that 2-suiter, so I must bid.

Yes I would raise, but it's close and maybe some of the experts will say that I'm insane.

If p reopen with a double I will certainly jump to 4. Or maybe bid 3.

No I would pass, but it's close and maybe some of the experts will say that I'm insane.

After p reopen with a double I will certainly bid 3 Heart, which is stronger then 2 NT.
Kind Regards

Roland

I would pass, but I would not say that a raise is insane.

I like to have a little in reserve, as partner always expects full values for a bid. If I had a fourth heart, it would be a clear raise. but with only 3 hearts, I would pass now and bid 3 if partner reopens.

It is inconsistent to pass and then bid game if partner reopens. If your hand is worth a game bid after a reopening double, then it is worth an immediate raise.

I guess that some would say that I am insane for passing over 2. B)

The reopening double tells me that something very, very strange is going on. LHO passed the 2 bid, I have a stiff spade, and partner reopens?

As it is, when the 2 comes to me, I would be expecting LHO to bid, certainly if I bid 3, it would be based on the apparent certainty that LHO is bidding. And do I want that to happen? More importantly, do I want partner making a decision over 3 or 4, thinking that I had a full raise to 2... the 3 bid shows a good 2 to a average limit... with a maximum limit, we bid game. But I don't have anything resembling a good 2 bid.

And, having made the sane pass, to jump to 4 suggests I changed my mind, when there is no basis for doing so. I have learned little of significance after my pass, other than the fact that something very strange is going on... but what kind of strange?

1 (2) pass (pass)
dbl (pass) 3 = decent raise, but not enough for a direct raise

1 (2) pass (pass)
dbl (pass) 2NT+3 = least of evils. May have 0 with doubleton ^^

I pass the 1st time and 3 over a double.

If pard reopens with anything but a double, I'll try 4.

#1 yes, but a direct raise does not
really promise more in my partnership,
but I can live with pass
#2 no, why should I?

I often favour light raises, but this isn't even close. Pass.

After partner's reopening double nothing happened to my hand. I'm good enough for 3 now (playing lebensohl here).
Kind regards,
Harald

:) I'm happy to see that the good players agree with my view that this hand is way, way below an immediate 3 bid and nothing special on the next round. From my bad experiences (like down three or they make 4 doubled), it almost hurts me to think of bidding 3 the first time. The problem, as I recall, was not enough trumps combined with a shortage of high cards.

What about a similar hand like:

x
10xxx
K10x
J9xxx

Is 3 the first time OK?

I would bid with the hand with 4 trumps and a stiff
