Here's a second hand from this weekend's Swiss Teams event:

First Match of the Day:
IMPS
Red versus Red

You hold

Q9763
Ax
Qx
T873

Partner opens a 15-17 NT

I bid 2 as a transfer to Spades
Partner bid 2 (denying a variety of different super accepts)

I see two reasonable choices:

1. Pass 2
2. Bid 2NT and invite game

Even though we were red at IMPS, I chose to pass. I figured that partner needed a max in order for game to have a good shot (the odds strongly favored partner holding a 15 count rather than a 17 count). More over, I thought that the Ax and Qx weren't pulling their full weight.

Spades broke 4-1, 2 made on the nose and I thought we were headed for a good board (Sue is a very good declarer and defender. If she made eight tricks, the other table wasn't likely to make more)

Regretfully, the other table played 3NT which also made.

i could be wrong, but if there are 8 tricks available in spades on a misfit, it's likely there are 8 tricks in NT. i'd risk an invite with this. we have a 9 and a 10 in addition to the hcp...

I think this is a clear pass, I had thought about it for a second at the table, but this is no great 8 count, the downsides are as you mentioned and your main suit is no real beauty.
Kind Regards

Just because partner did not make a super accept does not mean he is not maximum, he may hold only 2 S and perhaps a 5 card red suit. If he does hold 5 red cards I have awesome help in those suits. For me I invite with this, that is what I have.

I pass but its close. Give me the 10 or move my Q to the black suits and I'll take a call.

Probably because I started playing 16-18 NT, I always invite with these.

I would invite, I think at matchpoints it's close (partly due to the fact spades might be a lousy strain anyway) but red at imps it's clear.

Those who know me won't be surprised I consider it clear to invite with hands like this. I don't have any great insight other than that it just seems to work, and if this hand occurred in the bermuda bowl I would expect almost everyone to invite.

It's imps. You have to invite.

Pass if you need a swing, but under normal circumstances, you cannot afford missing a game.

Yep, I'd invite for sure. I'd pass at MPs.

System plug: I really like stayman followed by 2S to show this hand.
Please note: I am interested in boring, bog standard, 2/1.

You won't get enough mileage out of playing stayman then 2 shows Q9763 Ax Qx T873, IMO.

I've told you about this Dutch expression before Josh:

A good reader only needs half a word.

Same here.
"Gibberish in, gibberish out. A trial judge, three sets of lawyers, and now three appellate judges cannot agree on what this law means. And we ask police officers, prosecutors, defense lawyers, and citizens to enforce or abide by it? The legislature continues to write unreadable statutes. Gibberish should not be enforced as law."

I'd invite here both at IMP's and MP.

I still don't know what that means. Does a good cliche only need half a meaning?

BTW, a google search for "Dutch expressions" yielded about 1500 hits. A search for "Josh Donn" and another for "Joshua Donn" combined for about 800. And a search for "a good reader only needs half a word" yielded 0. I leave it to you to interpret these results.

This isn't a Keri plug.

The delayed 2 Han is referring to means something slightly different than the Keri call in the same sequence.
