The following hand really occured in a short BBO game in between BB vugraph sessions.

Scoring: IMP

p - 2NT - p -p
Dbl - all pass.

Please don't ask in which seat I sat.
Please note: I am interested in boring, bog standard, 2/1.

South can't have this hand. REDBL shows a weak hand with minors?
Something like:
xx=x=xxxxx=xxxxx

This isn't as mad as it seems. Doubling 2NT after the auction:

2NT P P

is usually very successful, since dummy is invariably broke, and making 8 tricks from your own hand if your hand is strong balanced is very difficult with no entries to take finesses.

However, if you know that opponents wil ALWAYS double, it allows for auctions like this. Redouble is automatic, if you took the risk of passing 2NT and hoping that West will double. Otherwise why not just bid 3NT straight up?

West's double is awful when playing imps. In MP the double works better for sure.

South really got you good! He's even strong enough to redouble and hit EW in any contract they bid...

Doubling 2NT on this auction has not been successful when I've tried it. Maybe I need to defend better, or just have a partner who makes better leads.

With NS vul, EW might have somewhere to run to if South redoubles 2NT, so I don't think pass is insane.

I think Wereagles hit the nail on the head. I'll tell you this:

South has never made this trap pass before yet knew 95% certain that west would double. And they didn't discuss it.

West has never made this double before, yet did it without looking at his hand.

I'm sure east appreciates it.

I think east was happy to have the opportunity to play with west, so he didn't complain.

Huh, he already passed as dealer. Are you really sure of this?

Damn I missed this?

In a more serious match a few hours later I was confronted with this problem:

Ax AQ97x Kxx AQx

You open 2N in 3rd and LHO doubles. Your partner is one of the better ones around and passes.

Is there a standard agreement? What do you do?

This needs table presence Phil, my normal reaction is to pass a gambler and 3 vs others.

ROFL.
I suspected as much. B)

Btw, in the Norwegian Swiss Pairs (I think) it went 2NT p p x, all pass. Declarer misguessed, since he thought the doubler had the missing cards and went -1 when a normal line would have been successful. After the hand he called for the director! No help, of course - we had a good laugh in the directing staff.
Kind regards,
Harald
