You sit down at a table on BBO and get the following hand: A9x, Qx xx AT9xxx.
2D by LHO weak two, passed around to you. Just before you click PASS (do you?) you realize that this is MATCHPOINTS, nobody vulnerable. Do you still Pass?

3C

Pass would not have crossed my mind,
it may in direct seat, and if it would, it
would be only a fraction of a second.

3 looks like having a triple protection:

1) from the (lack of) vulnerability
2) from the form of scoring
3) from the extra length in clubs as sometimes we'd balance even with 5 cards.

No wasted values in , so all my points are working. Even doubled for -1 is better than 2 +1.

-100 (down one doubled) is often a good score at MP
-300 (down 2 doubled) is typically a bad score at MP

I'm sitting on a 10 count. LHO has a below average hand. (Let's assume that he has a seven count or so). This leaves 23 points between partner and RHO.

If partner has significantly more than his fair share of the points (a good 15 count or so), then must be sitting on a penalty pass. Otherwise, he should ahve been able to scrape up a simple overcall, a double, 2NT, SOMETHING....

Equally significant, RHO wasn't able to raise Diamonds or find any other call. It doesn't sound like they have a fit, which means that there is no guaruntee that we have a fit.

I know that I have short Diamonds and should strain to find a call. Even so, I think that I'm passing here.

I know what I would do at the table (3C) but I don't like this question at all and I am not going to answer.
Please note: I am interested in boring, bog standard, 2/1.

It is possible that partner is sitting on 5 diamonds praying that I X. But I think it's far, far more likely that he has at least 2 clubs (no hand comes to mind for me that has 1 club, <5 diamonds, 10+ points, and passes). Which wouldn't be a great fit, but it is a fit.

I don't think we'll be doubled. Even if RHO has a club stack, he has to be worried that we have somewhere to run to.
