Scoring: IMP

W...N...E...S
..........P...P
1H..2D..X...P
3C..P...3N..X
P...P...P

I was West.

I can't say that I am over the moon about East's double, but he does seem to have a bit of a problem. Or does he? If he passes (the only other option?) does he have a penalty pass of a protective double by me? vul v not, with 5 card Spades suit, personally I would go hunting game. Pass and pull a protective double to 3S or 4S?

Additional question: Does my bid of 3C show extras? If I just bid a quiet 2H over the double that is where we stop.

As East, I would have bid 2S instead of X, but X isn't terrible.
I wouldn't pass. If I did, I would have a penalty pass of 2D.

For me, 3C doesn't show extras in this auction, after the X,
but it doesn't deny them either, 3NT is reasonable.

Stuff happens, don't beat yourself or partner up over this hand.

For me, 3 does show extras since responder hasn't promised any particular strength. So, I would bid 2.

I agree that stuff happens, but if we can't stop below game with 21 HCP's and no fit, then something is wrong.

I don't play that 3C shows extras here, it is hard enough already to get to a reasonable strain.
Please note: I am interested in boring, bog standard, 2/1.

I don't like dbl... it risks hearing 3, which is bad. But 'solving' the 3 problem with 3NT is probably even more risky. What's wrong with 3 at that time?

Over 2, I would either pass, bid 2 or 2, by that order of preference.

Thanks all. I don't feel so bad about posting it up, now.

Hi,

I can live with the neg. X by East,
I could also live with 2S.

3C does not promise add. strength,
why should it?
The possible 3C answer is probably
the reason not to double, but than
your partner could bid 3H.

With kind regards
Marlowe
