i'll vote for 1NT, since you have a balanced hand, in range (11-14), with stopper.

the diamond suit is too weak for 2.

also, i don't think the theory that 1/1 balance should deny an opening bid. jump ina suit in balanced position shows something like (12)13-15(16) HCP with a GOOD 6 card suit. if you don't have that, you'll balance with 1/1.

Agree with Vang

Easy 1NT bid. I don't think that the hand is strong enough for 2, nor does the quality of the Diamond suit excite me much.

Hi,

yes, you should bal.

But 1NT instead of 2D is better.

2D should show max weak 2 type of hand,
i.e. 9-12 with a good 6 card suit.

With kind regards

Why would you want to balance with a jump overcall?? (It's possible you meant the opening to be 1, but you've typed 1.)
To me the alternatives would be 1 and 1NT.
I prefer 1NT.
Kind regards,
Harald

This seems like a perfect 1NT that is within anyone's range for balancing. The diamonds are not good enough for 2.
Please let me know about any questions or interest or bug reports about GIB.

There is an old book by Kaplan (I think) devoted to balancing. I'm sure Kelsey had at least some chapters on the subject. Maybe all this stuff is dated, and not too useful in the current atmosphere of "bid with anything".

Mike Lawrence also has a book on balancing. I bet if you go on amazon you can buy a used copy, very very cheap. :P

One old old partner decades ago told me too never balance, I was not a good enough player, just bid your hand if you got real values and pass if you do not. You could try this and see how it works for you. :)
