Suppose the only non-Pass call you make on a hand is a pre-empt, and the only non-Pass call your partner makes is to double the final contract. If you are on lead, does his double suggest *anything* about what you should or shouldn't lead? Or should you make whatever lead you would have made without the double?

Obviously, there are lots of different factors eg whether the opponents are in a suit or NT, how strong your suit is, what level the contract is etc. But are there any general principles?

This is almost always a pure penalty double.

If it's vs NT partner doesn't want you to lead your suit.

Vs a suit it doesn't suggest anything specific but he might well have shortness in your suit or whatever so it's often good to lead the ace of your suit if you have it.

Actually, in the poll surgery fill-in lead-directing(?) double the majority thought that it asked p to lead his suit. Do you disagree with that, Justin, or is it that you have different examples in your mind?

I too would like to know as with my regular P it means "lead the suit you bid."

If the NT was bid AFTER the pre-empt, then it asks for you TO lead your suit.

If the NT was bid BEFORE the pre-empt, it would depend upon agreements, but I would assume it would ask you to NOT lead your suit.

After
(1NT) 2 (X) P
(3) P... (3NT) X

Now my normal lead would be a heart...nobody's shown extra stoppers in hearts, after all. So an X implies to me that I should lead a spade instead.

After
(1) 2 (X) P
(2NT) P... (3NT) X

Same auction, pretty much, but now declarer has promised that hearts are well stopped. That means if I have a minor, I'd probably lead it, unless I have a running heart suit or something. The X says for me to lead my suit.

Yes I disagree with that and also was thinking of a different auction. The only suit I wouldn't lead on that auction (2H-3D-p-3N-p-p-X) is a heart though.
