is this worth a 2H overcall? 1 spade in SAYC

RHO (North) opens 1 spade
1. Would you (East) overcall 2H with this hand? If not how much does it need to be improved so as to overcall?
♠A x x
♥A K x x x
♦K x x
♣ x x
2. Now switch seats to South (the partner of the 1♠ opener)
Assume East overcalls 2♥, you pass and pard reopens with a DBL.
1♠ (2♥) p p
X p ?
What do you bid with:
♠ x x
♥ J T x x
♦ J x x x
Do you pass for penalties (and risk Overcaller being doubled into game)?
Or bid 2♠?
Or what else?
Perhaps I am mistaken but it seems to me extremely dangerous to pass.
Maybe in MP? But I can't imagine doing so in IMPS

2. After reopening double: 2♠.
Same at both forms of scoring.

2. 2S at imps, pass at mps (though 2S is close).

- 2. 2♠. Pass is out of the question at any form of scoring.

- the overcall is the best way to get your hand off your chest.
- if partner doubles, bid 2♠, you're way too weak to pass that in, even at MP!

2. At IMPs, 2♠. Can't afford to risk a misdefense and a -470/670 swing back to teammates, especially at Swiss. At MPs, 2♠ as well - you have probably one trump trick and no entries. Very anti-field if you pass here.

Passing 2♥ double has no sense. Clear 2♠.

>>I agree with Roland, give me a hand with same HC but less controls and I wouldn't overcall at all.
Am I misunderstanding or are these two statements are in conflict?
I take it that Roland would rather overcall with a hand with an extra trump (the J) at the expense of the K♦.
I think Fluffy is saying to pass with that hand?

Correct. Longer and stronger suits make an overcall better. No one will disagree that AKJ9xxx is better than AKxxx, so I am happy to sacrifice ♦K if I can get an extra heart, preferably an honour.

No, sorry HC stands for HCP.
I mean Axx AKxxx Qxx Jx and I will pass. But AAKK is too strong.
Opening values with good 6 cards won't pass, actually that's exactly my book definition of a 2 level overcall.

After the reopening X 2S looks normal.

I would question whether this is a weaker hand, unless by "weaker" you meant "fewer high card points".

With responder's hand I think 2♠ is obvious at any form of scoring.

2♠ in response to the balancing X is automatic.

I'd routinely open this hand 1NT, but not overcall. Two reasons: I'll wrongside the contract too often and I'd receive a (♠) lead benefitting opps too.

I did think about a 1NT overcall, but it is very wrong, IMO. Downsides are that the five-card suit is hearts and that the spade suit is too long. If I held A10x in spades, I'd be closer to 1NT (much closer), as then I don't care about "killing" partner's possible Qx.
I cannot imagine anyone passing the reopen, at any form of scoring, unless you needed a swing at BAM.
