Pick up p. How close to 3♠ are you ?
(No agreements on 3♦, assume 4♦ is splint showing a stronger hand))

4.5 losers. I'd bid 3 spades without the diamond queen. In fact, I'm seriously tempted to bid 4 spades....I may make if partner has 5 spades to the king and no other points. I do hate missing game.

How do you get to 4.5 losers ? Counting in an oldfashioned way I get to 6 (2 spade, 3 red, 1 club)
I still bid 3♠ counting on a nine card spade fit and the solid clubs. P had 4 spades KTxx and single club, but the club suit saved the day

When I picked up the hand, I had six losers. Now that I know spades are trump, I count 4.5.

If partner has a doubleton club, I have no club losers (one small club gets ruffed). If partner has three clubs, I have no club losers (assume they split for LTC purposes). So there is no amount of clubs partner can have where I would count a loser in clubs.

In spades, well, I'm counting the AJ9x as half a loser. I probably shouldn't, but odds are good that, worst case scenario, we can finesse with this holding for 50% short of another trick.

We have nine trumps, and I have a side 6-card suit headed by the AK. If partner has Kxxxx-xxx-xxx-xx, I really like my chances. So, I'm going to ask him to bid 4♠ with hands where six may be lay-down?

4♦ for me.

And we ask police officers, prosecutors, defense lawyers, and citizens to enforce or abide by it? The legislature continues to write unreadable statutes. Gibberish should not be enforced as law."
