Hi,
a simple version of blood doping is
- train high in the mountains, which will lead
to more red blood cells, i.e. binding of
oxygen gets improved, which improves your
enery
- let a doctor take some blood into conserves
- short before the competition pumb the blood
back into your body, this will regain some of the
red blood celles you may have lost in the time
between the end of the training in the mountain
and the start of the competion
The adv. is, that you cant really detect the doping, because
the doping is "natural".

i agree mike, it does seem silly... there are drugs known to increase performance, but those drugs are available to all... a martini usually helps me

What do you think is insane, the ban, or the use of drugs by many sport stars?

I don't understand this doping issue.
If someone wants to destroy their own body with steroids, I think it's his own choice. Just like people can choose to destroy their own body by eating too much, by eating candy before bedtime without brushing teeth, or by sniffing glue. To say nothing about legal drugs like alcohol and cigarettes.
Is it unfair game if someone has the advantage of being on steroids? Come on, some people get advantages by training, others are just born with more talent. That's unfair as well.
I can see that the day we all become cyborgs, sport contests loose their meaning. Just like you can't bring a motorbike to Tour de France, we don't want to let a marathon be won by the one who caries the best pacemaker. But the day all kind of brain enhancers, liver enhancers, heart enhancers and muscle enhancers become literally impossible to live without, sport becomes more of a contest between cyborg engineers than between people.

Given that the word "drugs" means anything that is of a chemical nature to me, no I do not think using drugs is insane by the pros. In fact I think there is a rational for using dangerous drugs if you are a pro. For some this is the only way to feed and put a roof over their families. Yes they may die...so, they may die anyway is how they think.
Tennis lets you shoot up steriods to overcome a stiff back before a big match, football players use all kinds of painkillers to play...the fans seem to care less what these guys do to their bodies..shame on us.
