Bad luck, it has happend to other.
Ask yourself, which bid to make instead
of passingl, there is no other bid.

Nice results, even 8 down is better than them making 3N.

Were you West, North or East? If North, what else are you going to do? If East I would also pass. If West, I guess you were prepared to pass a re opening X by pd. Well, I wouldn't have passed; I would have bid something, (not sure what, I would need to think about it, lol,), but it certainly isn't unreasonable to pass. Its just that I hate passing at the 1 level with these hands.

Ah, so you were West - just read your post. Well, as i said i wouldn't pass, because I hate passing this sort of hand at the one level, and I would only pass if I could draw trumps eg KQJTx. Others will disagree.

Oh sorry.

Maybe you should just blast 3N. After all, opps almost certainly have a clubs fit. 2 X is unlikely to be better than 3N.

Maybe I'm just resulting. I'd probably have passed as well. Most of the times partner will double. S..t happens.

Is 3NT from West making?
If North is on lead, he will attack clubs,
because of his spade void.

As Marlowe notes, it's not so clear you are bringing in 9 tricks, and this is despite having all the spade help that you could hope for in partner's hand. Trying 3NT when your main source of tricks is a suit the opponents have bid often doesn't go well. So whatever I would do I would downgrade this hand significantly when evaluating it for NT play. The pass by you, and the pass by your partner, both seem reasonable enough. They do, after all, have a nine card club fit that they haven't found yet. Your side has an eight card spade fit but you don't want to play in it. Not as declarer anyway.

I would have passed also. At unfavourable 3NT has more appeal.

I had passed too with west, opposite a normal opening from east 3 NT is not sure at all and 1 or 2 NT surely not better then they playing 1 Spade undoubled. That pd has exactly 3 Spades is way against the odds, so I seldom will miss something by passing.
In this particular deal, your hands are strong enough to bid 3 NT but you still will fail to make it. So +200 (or 150..) is a much better result then -50.
Kind Regards

Nothing to worry about. Your (trap) pass was fine, and 9 times out of 10 your partner would reopen with a double. Unfortunately he had too many spades so that he was unable to picture your penalty.

Furthermore, the best result you can get on the actual layout is the number of 50's. 3NT your way is not on after North's natural 10 lead. The maximum is 8 tricks (four spades, two hearts, one diamond and one club).
