Scoring: IMP

Auction has proceeded: Pass - Pass - (3)

Your plan?

(If you start with a double, partner bids 4)

Do we have agreements like 4 showing a 2-suiter?

I could cue 4 and bid 5 over that. Of course we can bash but it seems like 50-50 that slam will make, and sometimes partner can raise 5 when it is right.

The only alternative seems bidding 6, which sometimes may talk them into sacrificing, but then again it might talk them out of it.

I guess we don't. I agree, quite a number of players play that 4m in these auctions is forcing and shows that m and a M. But I'm not sure thats best here anyway, as H appears the key to the hand.
These freaks are always a guess; I will bid 5H, hoping that pd looking at the AS or AH will have the nous to raise.

BTW I don't think anyone will X.

4 then 5, I don't want to just guess to bid a slam since I might also lose a trick in either of my suits as well.
Please let me know about any questions or interest or bug reports about GIB.

I'll admit I did double, and over 4 I bid 5, hoping partner would know to go on with the right stuff. Of course partner has something like:

Oh, did I mention that hearts broke 5-0 and I was down 1 in 5?

It seeems on your auction the opp forgot to bid 4s? They have ten spades, a void and are at fav vul?

I would bid 6H, even if we're off 2 aces the opps will often bid 6S if theyre split. If you never bid 6H as a gambling type of bid esp red/white then you're playing a very exploitable game where the opps can just save when you have a lock 6H bid.

Justin, no one bids has lock bids these days.. lol.

Incidently, there's a case for a 5 overcall, which after a pree should show 11 playing tricks.

I vote for this only because the opponents are at favorable.

At any other vulnerability I would 4 then 5.

I don't like 4S-then-5H.

I quite like the 5H overcall as well.

I'd rather bid this one constructively. I agree with playing partner for one card, but there are a lot of cards partner could reasonably have that won't help us at all (any of the AKQJ, the KJ, the J). Since RHO is very likely to hold the A for the preempt with our holding the queen, there is really only one card partner can have that makes the slam good (the A) and even then it's not necessarily cold (say partner has xxx Ax KQxxx xxx, a pretty good hand, but a 4-1 club break will probably doom the slam). And we're short enough on values that LHO might have pretty decent defense -- he's not going to sacrifice in 6 holding two aces for example (he doesn't know for sure the diamond ace will not cash).

Maybe I'm less likely to take a "random" sacrifice over a slam bid like this than some people, but it seems like:

(1) LHO has ATxx of hearts, he will never sacrifice, he will double, and we will go down (probably two tricks).

(2) LHO has two aces. He will never sacrifice, and we will probably go down.

(3) LHO has not very many spades (just because we have one spade and RHO has seven doesn't mean LHO has more than one or two). He will never sacrifice. We may go down on a trump promotion if LHO has singleton spade even if partner holds the trump ace.

It just seems to me that this slam will probably fail unless partner really has the right hand. I agree that bidding slams that might fail in auctions like this will sometimes work by getting LHO to sacrifice, but bidding slams that will probably fail when par likely belongs to us seems like bad tactics.

I don't like 5, as partner might easily raise with AK, and opps don't rate to take the save after this auction.
I think there's two reasonable approaches. Either 4 followed by 5 or just bash 6.
Kind regards,
Harald
