Few wks ago last round we have two star player as opps and my partner is Polish as usual very good. Both red, i hold 4 spades to jack, stiff heart, void in diamond and 8 clubs to kqj. My turn i opened 4 clubs, lho pass my pd 5c, now rho bid 5h obiously putting all the balance of points in his partner hand. I feel like dbl but my clubs and partner support i figured we might not get a club trick. so passed 5h. Now i know i have to some how get a diamond ruff, how do i tell partner, first thing i have to try to get to partner hand and may be partner will find a diamonds rtn. so i decided to lead q of club from kqj of clubs hoping partner put to 2 and 2. so my q of club lead, dummy with aqx of spades; 5 h to j10, axxx of diamonds stiff 9 c. only thing i am waiting now is if pd goint to win with ace of club and rho follows with club. pd own lookig at dummy had no problem returning k diamond, i ruff rtn spade; rho wins plays a trump pd wins ace of h, i just colud not resist played my k clubs, rho disgusted calimed all the tricks and down one.

I always thought that the traditional way to tell partner that you want to ruff something after you've pre-empted is to lead low in your suit, not an honor.

To do so, however, can be a double-edged sword. There is a famous "Menagerie" hand where Papa underleads his honors to signal a wish for a ruff, and that permits Hideous Hog to discern where the cards in the critical suit are located and to make otherwise unusual plays to pick up the suit, all because of the opening lead.
