I just got back from seeing Grindhouse (I figured that Zombie movies were d'rigour for Easter Sunday). Luckily, I was able to convince George and Beth of the same, cause this is not a movie that can be seen alone. More importantly, this is not a movie that can be seen on DVD. It must been seen in a movie theater (and, quite frankly, I think that it must been seen).

I'm not quite sure how to describe Grindhouse, especially since I've never been to one of the eponymous theaters to which Tarantino dedicated this homage. (The closest that I've come to anything like this was a few late night showings of Rocky Horror or Heavy Metal). I can, however, say the following: Grindhouse reminds me of the 24 hour movie marathons that we used to hold back at Wesleyan. Tarantino has the same love for the old classics, the same same juvenile sense of humor, the same preoccupation with blood, sex, and adrenaline. However, Tarantino did us one better because he made some new and beautiful.

I readily admit: This movie has a lot of blood and some very explicit violence. However, I think that the subject matter is so over the top that most of what's going on rushes over you. Its like you're down at the beach letting the waves crash down upon you. Are you really going to complain that you've just gotten all wet? (If so, I pity you)

There are a couple scenes that I found a bit disturbing, but its not nearly as bad as, say, 'Reservoir Dogs".

Go out and see this now! If you can, get a bunch of folks to go with you. Try real hard to bring some BBQ. Try even harder to sneak in some beers. And if you do go to see this in Boston, let me know cause I'll probably be seeing it again.

If its just a set the mood food, then I'll dial up some Famous Daves and see it tomorrow.

I thought that Grindhouse was entertaining. I think that the Kill Bills and Pulp Fiction are better, though. I also wouldn't suggest you take your girl freind or significant other unless she is the kind of woman who enjoyed Sin City.

Totally agree -- it's a pity that the theater wasn't even quarter full . The only consolation is that there were few more laughs than it than for "Snakes on a plane".

The fake previews were hilarious too -- I really enjoyed the "split" scene in Thanksgiving -- that was truly "inspired" (but what else would you expect from the guy who gave us "Hostel"?

BTW, some people seem to think that Death Proof was weaker (and even boring), but I disagree...

I prefered Death Proof, but I could see how some would feel it wasn't as action packed. I thought Kurt Rusel was great.

I went to the 11:40 A.M. showing and the theatre was half full. That seemed amazing to me on a Monday morning.

Just saw Grindhouse, warning this is not your typical romantic comedy despite what some reviews seem to infer. BTW must we have New Zealand and Ausi chicks come over here and beat up a nice American man such as Mr. Goldie Hawn? Did anyone see what NZ wants to dump into a volcano on the news today?

I confess that I am a bit non-plussed by suggestions of taking a barbecue to a cinema. Apart from the risk of setting off the sprinkler system the sackful of briquettes together with the remaining paraphernalia may not make it past the check-in. They have their popcorn franchise to worry about, after all. Setting up the fire pit in the aisle may breach safety regulations. Not just because the exit routes may be blocked contrary to the Lord Chamberlaine's regulations but I suspect that the no smoking regulations may extend beyond the inhalation of noxious weed. From recollection it takes roughly 30 minutes for the lumpwood charcoal to reach a stable white-hot cooking plateau, following which the personal attention of a testosterone fueled male who has just been hyped up by a gore fest may not be the most responsible mix imaginable.

Edit: Just realised all y'all must be going to drive-ins. We don't get them here.

Just read in The Times today that Grindhouse is not going to be released in UK, due to disastrous box office takings in USA. Oh, well.

I loved Planet Terror but Death Proof has too little blood and action! really boring if you ask me. And all the girl talk scenes..
