My only choices are 1♠ and Pass. No way am I making a 1st hand pre-empt with two outside tricks. Besides, I'd hate to pre-empt us out of 4♥.

1♠ but pass is a close second. The reason I chose to open is that I would hate to overcall with that moth-eaten suit later. When you open you don't promise a good suit.
Besides, 1♠ takes the 1-level away from LHO. I would most likely have passed if I had hearts instead of spades.

I would open 1♠ but I have no qualms with pass. and for a beginner/intermediate thread i recommend that the "correct bid" is pass. However, I really dislike 2♠ with this hand at these colors.

The peanut gallery is being very generous, I don't even think this is close. Unless playing a nonstandard system anything but pass is ridiculous.
The hand is clearly not worth opening (just how much are we counting the diamond queen for??)
It will be trivially easy to come into the auction next round.
What is the problem?? Since when are opening bids on the 1 level supposed to be preemptive? Why not open 1♠ without either ace then?
I have no problem with opening in a system or style that involves light openings, but short of that this is not even a problem. Would people be opening JTxxxx Axx x Axx?

Well, I have and I didn't like it. I would much rather be on the opening side. For that to happen, I must take the opportunity to pose opps this problem when I happen to have 6 spades

and because you're not pre-empting partner.
The big disadvantage is that your partner may overbid- say, bidding 4♠ as a sacrifice when they don't have 4♥. It depends upon who I'm playing with, but I think I'd open 1♠. Most opponents have good mechanisms for bidding over 2 of a major, and partner will expect me to open light.
