My partner opened 2NT (20-22), and i passed. When the full holding proved to be
my partner left telling me if i ever heard about transfers. Of course 2NT went down one when hearts proved to be 5-3.
It's easy to make comments on particular cases. The important think is what's happening in most of the cases, and my opinion is you should transfer. Sometimes 3
♠ will make and 2NT no, and sometimes, when partner has good fit and good controls 4
♠ will make. So just passing 2NT is usually worse than transfering. And you should be content with that. Sometimes some methods work, other times not, important is the frequency of success.
I don't understand how 2NT failed. Even on a Heart lead at trick 1 and 5-3 Heart break they just take 4 Heart tricks and the Ace of Clubs. Total 5 tricks. You take 3 Club tricks, 2 Diamond tricks, 1 Heart trick and 2 Spade tricks. Total 8.
If Hearts were 6-2 and they find the Heart lead and the Ace of Clubs is with the long Hearts, then you go down, and I rate it unlucky. But then a bad Spade break may scupper you in 3S, perhaps.
Not that I am saying that it is right to pass 2N, nor that this hand is proof one way or the other.
