Ok.. This is becoming a pet peeve of mine. People, some who I ahve no idea who they are (maybe using a second nickname I don't recongnize?) are entering my name into the tournment box. Even friends who I would LOVE to play with, without asking me first.

When the request to register box comes up, you can not send them a chat message or anything else until you answer yes or no. I think the proper way is to communicate with your potential partner first by chat, and see if they want to play. Maybe they don't have the time (have meeting, party, dinner, etc). Maybe they are feeling bad.

So I was wondering if this is a common practice, and that is acceptable. If it is polite to simply answer "no" without sending a reason, I guess it would be ok. But I feel the need to tell someone why I will not play. a) No time, B) another partner, c) another tournment, d) who the heck are you (hehehe).

Well, I guess you can figure out how I voted above.

Maybe Fred should implement a third button, so that we have
"Yes", "No", and "No, sorry" ;D
I usually open with 13 cards

I remember working on some system stuff, and poof - sucked into a tourney with a person who I had never met. I was livid at the TD - got out very fast saying I don't know this person, why am I here, you have interrupted my practice time.

2 days later, working now under a pseudonym because I didn't want to get disturbed due to the new changes being presented - both pard and I get sucked into an indy event! Needless to say we BOTH were not happy, considering the pseudonyms are there just for us to practice and have that quality time needed.

I will say this - that was about 6 weeks ago, and since that time, I haven't had any problems. It could be many things, but I look at it this way - it was an aberration that corrected itself. B)

If someone asks me and I can't play for some reason then I
will send them a message and say why I had to say no. On
the other hand, if someone sends me a message and I don't
want to play with them because our bridge philosophies
differ (e.g., KISS vs complexity) or because they simply suck
then I typically won't respond. I guess this goes under the
general principle of "if you don't have anything good to say
then don't say anything."

If I'm registered on the Partnership Desk for a tourney, then no chat is necessary since I've expressed an interest in playing in the event with a random partner.

On the other hand, a random request from an unknown person stands no chance of getting a "yes" without chat. For these requests I have no concerns about just hitting the "no" button quickly.

I could alter the invitation to allow the invitee to say more, but I dont know that I see the point.

:)No. 1 thing I enjoy at BBO is nice people. So if I want to partner I ask first.

What annoy me is people who do not answer - for I feel compel to wait to ask different person until first person accept/reject.

tee hee I no see problem with say "no thanks" when i do not want to play but is this not common courtsey?

Y, but here, if the Server asks - "G, would you like to play with Uday", there is no point in the choices being

Yes
No
No Thanks

as opposed to

Yes
No

Might as well change the message uday sees (when G refuses) to "Uday is really sorry, but cannot play" B)

But you dont need to wait for person A to respond before inviting person B. You can invite more than one person...

I was all set to click the "No" button. But then I remembered: What if I am currently playing in a tourney? In that case, the person cannot cannot ask me in a private chat message, and the formal invitaion is the only way to accomplish the request.

Ordinarily I would say that etiquette requires a private request first. I think I would be willing to break that rule if (a) I were at a table where I can't see the chat, such as in a tourney, (B) I have a frequent partner relationship with the person, or (possibly) © if there is less than 2 minutes remaining before the tourney start time, and there is not time for a chat, a reply, and a formal invitaion.

I agree QQ - BUT several times I have looked for a person (in the lobby) who is in the 'find a partner' list so that I can ask if they would play with me and find scrolling down and down and down ( as more folk arrive it seems to be IMPOSSIBLE to find the person I am looking for) >:(--- SO I ask via partnership desk -- and SOMETIMES get a reply that the person is UNABLE to play :- so maybe a "thanks but no thanks" button would be appropriate ??

Surely IF you put your name ON the list you should at least be available ?? B)

The invitation dialog should be understood to mean
"Hi - would you like to play with me in a Tourney?"

not

"I'm aggressively signing up up on the off chance you want t o play w/me"

I think it is pointless to find your victim online, msg her, get an ack, then register. Why bother, when you can simply invite and see what she says? I think it is pointless to have a "No thanks" button in additon to a "No " button. Does No then imply "No, get lost" ? I suspect we will not be changing this anytime soon.

BTW: if you invite 2 people and both accept, the 1st one "takes", the second one fails.

From the votes (10 to 1), it looks like requesting via chat first is the "proper" way to request a partner, but the various replies shows that vote was not this overwelming.

These exceptions seem, obviously, ok.

1) If you are listed on the partnership desk, a private chat is not required.

2) If one of your regular partners want to play, it seems ok to just invite

3) If you are playing in a tournment where you can not be asked first by private chat, it is ok

4) If you see a relative of yours online, or a close personal friend, you can ask this way too...

I locked the poll since we seem to have covered this topic now.

Poblem I have is that when i doing something, and someones asks me to play and I hit enterbutton I am connected to that person as my pd even if I Didn't want too. So now I have to go unregister, maybe make it a little harder to get paired up ?

Would that be a big thing to create(add) a TYPE IN box as option to the NO button ?
Something like that one for direct answering of mails.

It is a bid hard to search along 2000+ players - to send a quick "sorry i have a predated game" - especially when you are currently playing at a table.

What I would like to see is more functionality for the chat box. Currently, if we send a mail to someone (by typing in the name) that person can only see the message the next time he/she logs in. I would like it to send message to that person if that person is online at the moment.

Other functions I've already mentioned some time ago..hehe. But 1 great thing about bbo is that its obviously a bridge-focused place. Its not a chat room.
Its really written to improve/promote bridge. I like that :D
