Hi,

There is a new book that goes into an exhaustive demonstration of almost every sequence that is part of SAYC. I got it, and I would highly recommend it - even then, you will find people who have a different understanding of SAYC.

1. bbo site where you sign on to play if you go after sign in to explore bridge then learning you'll find there a lot of things to improve your biding and play plus interacive exercises.
2.You can download the same thing you find on bbo from www.acbl.org
3. read this forum the beginner intermediate section and ask questions when in doubt.
4. join the bil=beginner intermediate loung club which you can find it after you sign on bbo go to private clubs and read the requirements to join. It is free and a lot of bridge teachers come there and have lessons about different topics.

I think books are your best bet. I highly recommend "Modern Bridge Conventions" by Root & Pavlicek. (Old book, but thorough). Downey/Pomer may also be worthwhile if specifically trying to learn the specific variant of Standard American, SAYC, though be aware SAYC is a rather ill-conceived hodgepodge of various popular treatments, with many systemic holes, rather than a coherently structured system. It was designed for individual tournaments where everyone forced to play the same thing, given up for dead, then resurrected by the emergence of online bridge & the need for a quick baseline agreements to begin play with very brief discussion. It wasn't really designed to be a good, winning system.

Don't try to learn too many at once. It is a much better to know only a very few gadgets extremely thoroughly than a large number of them superficially. Try to gain an understanding of what problem the gadget is trying to solve, what one gives up by using it, and the logic of how the responses work both without & with further bidding by the opponents.

Mike Lawrences software CONVENTIONS is also excellent. It contains a lot of material, not so much on millions of conventins, but on quizzes and sequences.

For books Modern Bridge Conventions is excellent.

Hi,

to answer your question: No.

The best way is to learn those conventions with
a regular partner, since you need to learn also,
what does partners hand looks like, if he opens
one he one level, a weak two and so on.

The problem with computer bidding is, that most
computer go "nuts" if something different occurs.
BBO is ok, but you will quite often play with lots
of people forming loose partnerships,
but to learn the game, in way, so that you improve
is to have a partner.
The beautiful feature of this game is, that it is
a partnership game.

The SAYC full disclosure convention card that you can use while playing on BBO is also a great resource.
