An interesting post on rec.games.bridge got me to thinking.
You open third seat 1♠ with KQJxx-Kxxx-AJx-x. Partner splinters 4D. Now what?
Partner seems likely to have two Aces and a Queen (with a King, he might have opened). Partner might have ♠A, ♣KQ. If 4♥ is Last Train, he will reject with the ♠A, ♣KQ. He'd also likely reject if the A-Q are in separate suits, it seems. How does partner know which A-Q combo is "right?"
The solution might be for P-P-1♠-P-Splinter to have "higher suit tendencies" and for P-P-1♠-P-2♣(Drury)-P-positive-P-Splinter to have "lower suit tendencies." Or, the reverse perhaps.
I'm curious if folks have agreements as to a direct Splinter, as opposed to a delayed Splinter done after Drury.

"Gibberish in, gibberish out. A trial judge, three sets of lawyers, and now three appellate judges cannot agree on what this law means. And we ask police officers, prosecutors, defense lawyers, and citizens to enforce or abide by it? The legislature continues to write unreadable statutes. Gibberish should not be enforced as law."

I have a simpler solution: since 3rd seat openers can be as light as
KQJx
Kxxx
xx
xxx,
pard's splinter should be VOID-oriented, e.g.
Axxx
Axxx
--
Qxxxx
I wouldn't want him to splinter on
Axxx

Good point.

None of my partners have ever splintered opposite my third seat openers before so I'm not sure
I'm sure it would show 5 trumps though, and likely a void.

Mine neither, because I play fit jumps by passed hands with all of them.

I am inclined to agree with Justin here, as 3rd seat opener's can be lead directing.
