Scoring: IMP

1H P P X
1S 1N X P
2H P P X
P P ???

EW are pickups, as are NS but they are both juniors and know each other to be juniors at heart in the auction.

sorry - too late. there is no way to say, "0 to 5" and later, "I have 6". All bidding info is accumulative. Mistakes are mistakes. South is only 1 point heavy, anyway. Not likely a death sentence. I think the orginal pass was a small mistake compared to the big blunder with the dbl of 1N.

Let's see, opener removed the 1NX because opener had no clue what the dbl meant (me too... although I would suspect it meant 55 in minors). In a confusing auction, a poor strategy is to further confuse it.

I would suspect opener is 4522, thinking how clever s/he was to show both suits at the 1-level. Now South has a choice of playing a 5-2 heart fit with a bad heart break offside, or a 4-3 spade fit with a bad spade break onside. Since South has a heart honor and it is possible (tho unlikely) that opener is 46, I think South should pass now.

South has a fine 6 pt hand. Why oh why, didn't he bid 1NT and whether forcing or not things have a better chance of coming out OK.

Now South is faces with playing a likely 52 H fit or a 43 S fit. I choose the H fit since I have Qx and just perhaps opener has 6 weakish hearts. On a real good day, maybe 8 tricks can be had as the opps may have missjudged. Opener really shouldn't have been bidding 1S in this action with a 45 bare min.

Anyhow...expect to go -1 for a loss of 100 which should be no disaster if the opps can make 1NT or something in D.

BTW, making a silly mistake is common. I have bid straight blackwood, got a one ace answer, added that one ace to my one ace, got three and bid slam. TWICE.

There is no right bid here, you have to make a last guess where you want opponents to guess in the first place (you and your partner making the well judged calls). Think before you do something unusual...

I'm not sure I understand the problem. I like 2HX. Sure, it might not make, but a heart cover card, an unexpected Ace on the side, and finesses expected to work in spades. Perhaps XX, for penalty???

Why xx..?? I just don't understand. If 2Hx makes you'll get a great score. If the opps have misscommunicated, they now get an out in 3D and do really think you have positive expancy whacking 3D ?

You never support H here..you doubled 1NT after passing, maybe PD will think xx means rescue. I won't take that chance and wouldn't dream of xx.

Just pass and hope 2Hx makes for a great score. .. neilkaz ..

My suggestion to redouble was in jest. I merely meant to underline that I feel no need to make up for a prior weak action. This decision turned out pretty well. Partner is in the expected spot of 2H, I am expecting it to make, and we are doubled. Life is good!

XX for penalty is almost always a terrible bid. In this case, it would further confuse an already confusing auction.

At MP, if the opps have miscalculated, making 2HX is a top. If you are wrong because hearts are breaking 6-0 and several are also in 2HX, the XX turns a poor board into a zero. So you risk turning a poor board into a zero for no gain whatsoever.

At IMPS, you score +590 for 2HX making. If the opps are wrong, the XX gains 170. If you are wrong and 2HXX is down 2, the XX costs 300. So you risk turning -300 into -600 in order to turn +590 into +760. Again, this is a poor money decision.

No problem, Ken !! I also feel lucky that this hand has turned out as well as it did and rarely expect to be -2.

How much more of the world's habitat and food supply for animals do we plan on destroying. How many more wetlands are we going to drain, fill, and build on? How many more sand dunes are we going to knock down in the interests of high-rise hotels or luxury homes?

Well, did you make it (6?)?

Yup, 2H made with no problems - I was just curious what people would do without a strong indication of a psyche [the 1♠ bid was phony] and therefore whether South had fielded it.

Pass, obviously. How can one even consider doing anything else. Partner could easily be 4-6 majors, but since these are juniors you can't trust anyone to have their bids in HCP.

I agree. North's final pass seems clear. And I like north's double, too.
