We all find double game swings at imps exciting. Occassionaly we run across double slam swings, now that is something. Here is a hand that is a double-doubled slam swing. One side is making 6Hx, the other 6Sx. To add to the mix, there is a 5Sxx making two overtricks (more than the slam itself).

This was the first Homebase tourney I played in, and it was a complete disaster for me and my partner. This hand pretty much summed it up: I was North holding

and opened 1♦ in second seat. LHO overcalled 4♠, and RHO raised to 6♠. What can I do except double? Credit to my partner for leading a diamond and thereby holding the loss to -1210 ...

Imagine north opens 1D and east overcalls 4S. Are you going to bid 5H vul versus not on Six HCP? Surely you will probably pass and wait to see what partner does. Then West bids 6S and partner doubles. Are you really going to bid 7Hs?

This hand is really a challenge for NS. The EW bidding seems some what easier. On this hand, NS played hearts twice, EW spades four times.

Hi David, thanks for giving homebase a try. We that hope the several disasters that struck your partnership will not turn you off to playing in future ones. Clearly this hand is VERY difficult, and indeed I would have bid just as you and your partner did at your table. I mean, what else can you do? And with three ACES plus extra values how can you not double 6Ss?

I missed the event with the wild hand in it (dang it), but I did play in the one after it, and like you, several disasters struck my partnerships as well. Oh well, there is always NEXT TIME!.

I'm sure it won't I can always blame my partner, blame my own bad play, curse our bad luck, and grudgingly admit that our opponents might have played well, but I don't have any complaints about the the organisation of the tourney.
