teams, unfavourable vulnerability, the auction is 1H P 4H to you.

My bid worked out very well as the hands lay, but i suspect is probably wrong nevertheless (my partner certainly thought so). Is your answer any different at pairs?

thanks,
chica

9 card suits are not governed by rules. 5♣ looks sort of obvious. I'm not sure what I'll do over the inevitable 5♥; probably pass I guess.

5♣ also looks kind of obvious to me. Unless they are playing a limited opening system, in which case I'll chicken out and put a green one down. When 5♥ comes back, I'll let them take the last guess.

5C, but pass is certainly an option, red vs. green you
often go down 2, which means you loose 500 vs. 400.

But then passing with a 9 card suit is asking a lot.

You are about to loose 2♣, 1♦, 2-3♠ tricks. Of cause there is a chance that partners hand will cover a few of these looser and you will not go down 3-4. At this vul. down 2 is to much, so you need 2-3 tricks from partner. If additionally one of your kings is worth a trick, 4♥ won't make.
In this case even down 1 is to much.

So pass is the correct bid at this vul.
w/r 5♣ is obvious, because down 3 is still better than (edit:6♥) 4♥ making.

Holding 9 hcp, it is unlikely opps will bid to 6♥. So if you bid 6♣, you'll probably get doubles. If you bid 5♣, they'll either double or bid 5♥.

Since bidding 5♣ leaves opps with a guess to make, bid that. 6♣ leaves them with no guess: they'll have to double you most of the time :P

I assume from your comment that you passed and it worked.
I think it's very close: you are at the wrong vulnerability, you have a lot of defence (in context)... but you do have nine of the wretched things. I don't think I could manage to pass, but it could easily be right.

I would bid 5C even when playing against limited openings.
Please note: I am interested in boring, bog standard, 2/1.

Either you're playing against total noobs, or partner has some values with some ♥. In the first case, I'll bid 5♣, in the 2nd I think a Dbl might do miracles! But I don't know if I'd have the guts to make that call at the table :)

I can believe that pass might work better at these colours, but I can't bring myself to do it. Add me to the 5♣ crowd.

Chalk up 5♣ for me -- if it doesn't work out too well, pard will understand. There's all the more reason to make the bid at teams, because your counterpart is likely to make the same bid as well.
