seems like 4nt does have the advantage of less misunderstanding, as it asks pard to bid game in his best minor... i really can't think of a better bid, even tho it might go down a lot... worth it, i think...

it seems to me that 5 diamond is best. Double is for diamond, I suppose.

Pass, I guess partner has long Spades and some HCP, and 4S can be a nice contract... I wouldn't bypass 4S, and a Dbl is responsive. I pass and let partner come back in the bidding.

You are real short in hearts :-) Do you really expect partner, with likely 4 hearts and maybe 5 hearts, to balance back in if you pass?
If you pass here, and your LHO bids 4H's, you have time to get in a 4NT bid. But now you give them forcing passes and you have allowed WEST time to show his support (hearts 3-4-6-0 not unlikely).
Rather than pass then bid 4NT over their 4H contract, I think it is better to bid 4NT now. With 6-5 and no points and vul right, apply the pressure now. And who knows, we might make five of partners best minor.

Indeed, my bid was 5D. Partner held:
KQJ8x
Jx
AKxx
Kx
... for 5Dx made and a swing of 1170 (550+620) when the club ace wasn't lead
The 2nd question arises now:
What would you have bid with my partner's hand:
a) Dbl
1
