Scoring: XIMP

Our auction was

(P) -1-(2)- X
(3)- P - (P) - X
(P) -3 - AP.

[Thanks Owen - auction corrected]

1is natural, unlimited and unbalanced (may have longer ), includes most 11s and few 10s.

South. 3 As and a 6-card suit are not a minimum: 3, even if it is a free bid.
N (with a good fit and singleton in ) should find the strength to rebid 3 over 3.

North. He has a great hand opposite a south opener. Assume for a moment you play ZAR openers (where 1 can be EVEN less than 10 hcp... as long as 25 zar points with spade suit or 26 zars without). Zar theory says 52 zar needed for game in 3nt or 4 of major. North has, 11 hcp, 1 control point, 13 distributional points, 2 fit points of KQ of diamonds, and a fit point for singleton diamond. That is 28 ZARs, this suggest either dbl was an underbid and north should bid 2H, or pass of 3D was an underbid. I would bid 2H over 2 myself.

I agree with Ben - North should bid 2H first, then show his spades. This hand is borderline invitational/GF in an uncontested auction. In competition, you have to go for it.

South doesn't escape blame, however - assuming X, South should have rebid 3D immediately - he has an over-minimum hand, though not by much. North can then bid 3H.

Both players undervalued their hands. To be fair, it wasn't by much.

Again if you open 3QT, 13-14 hcp and rebid your 6 card you can hardly have a worse hand as South.

North is closer to making a slam try than passing.

My opinion is in line with Peter's here. Another question - If North had doubled twice then bid 3 over 3, what would that show?

depend on how to use free overcall , i think it's a limit hand when 2 is forcing.

I agree that north is worth 2H directly. I don't see how you can possibly catch up after the first double, no reasonable road leads to game.
Please note: I am interested in boring, bog standard, 2/1.
