This was our inelegant aution. Is it practical to reach the right spot - 3N from the north hand?

I'd rather like south to mention his solid 7-card suit in one of his first two calls. 3 seems misguided as you know what you want to mention about the hand - clubs. But if you are consulting partner with 3 then surely right to agree spades? 4 doesn't seem such a bad contract (and looks to be where you land after 3, as well).

Problem I have with 3C is that it is not forcing as I play and doesn't have to be anywhere near this much trick-taking potential. I'd hate to languish in 3C opposite as little as the K10xx of spades and out.

I'd rather Double a second time over 2. This is not penalty, and North will certainly pull to 2. Now you can find 4, but 3NT is quite difficult imo. Bidding 3 after the 2 bid will probably ask for a stopper (since you'd bid 2 instead of Double with a strong hand with ), but these agreements aren't written down... :P

The only thing you need to worry about the bidding is how to make 5 :P

you double and then bid 3C, still not strong in your method?

If you couldn't mention 3C at any round, how would you get pd play 3NT?

I didn't say it wasn't strong - I said it was non-forcing. It could be:

Ax, AKx, xx, AKJ98x. If partner only holds a king or a couple of queens he doesn't have to bid again.

After the 2D bid, seems to me that pard is likely to consider 3C freely bid to show about what you have. His 3S bid is not a stretch but he might try 3D to see if you can get to 3NT but when you go back to 3S he will be better placed to decide.
