Hello everyone

LOLs can be used for players of either sex. They describe the inofffensive nature of the animal, not the gender.

Several decades ago, I was comparing scores with a lady who was a fairly regular partner of mine. She started out describing one hand by saying that two LOLs played against her and her husband on board #17.

I looked at my scorecard and declared quite firmly in a loud, deep, stage voice that, "I was one of those LOLs who played that board against you." Both my partner and I were slightly over six foot tall 'male' players.

Apparently we had arrived at her table a little late and we had no time for chit chat.

Regards,
Robert

Masterpoints mean nothing. Instead you should consider if they are good players. I'd rather have a junior with 100 MP as partner than a LOL with 1000 MP.

Would you rather have a junior with 100 MP, or a Grand Life Master?

This happened to me once, I had 50 points but was fairly competent, and showed up with my mom, a very good player with thousands up points, at a 99er game. They let us play and adjusted us out of the overalls afterwards, we had a 76 % lol.

I don't know what a Grand Life Master is, but do you have to be like a national champion for that or so? Master points say nothing, nada.

Sort of surprised that there is so much discussion about a negligable amount of Master Points.

Maybe it is because some people in this forum have to mention that Master Points mean nothing whenever someone mentions the word? B)

Anyway, of course Master Points do say something. It just doesn't equate to skill, that is all.

Yes. And get over 10,000 points. Yes, points are not the ultimate indicator of playing ability, but getting that many MUST mean that the person has a lot of (meaningful) bridge experience.

Well, it's not so much the .68 points that is of concern, but playing in a 299er tournament when you're not elgible. We're just trying to reassure Ken that it wasn't the end of the world that he played in this.

Yes, Elianna, and I appreciate it. You might think that by the time a guy approaches his 67th birthday he would have learned to read the labels.

My main regret here is that the real 299ers who came in second deserved to come in first. I don't imagine they plan to sue me for the masterpoints, but they probably would like to have had their names put forth as the winners. Anyway I felt the need to confess and I imagine I will now shut up about it.

Thanks,
Ken

Little Old Lady.

Which is the corresponding word for stupid male players? I've seen a lot of them during my bridge life as well as really good female players!
Caren

Well, there is a nice story written by Harison-Gray,
were he tells about a tournament encounter with a
LOL.

After this encounter he gave a new translation for LOL
Laughing Old Lady.

With kind regards
Marlowe

And the story was that Harrison-Gray and his partner bid to a grand slam off the ace of trumps. Down 1. After the hand the LOL with the ace was asked why she hadn't doubled. Her reply was:

"You don't know Harrison-Gray, it seems. He would just redouble"!

Roland

No, that's another one.

The story I was thinking of, appeared in one of Grays regular
columns (Country Side (?!)), and he was playing with someone
called Doormouse (?!), Shannon Doherty (?!) (spelling is certainly
not correct).

The question, he had to answer was, did the LOL, at least she looked
like a LOL, duck the Ace or not. He got it wrong.

The story ends with the words, that on their way home, the
doormouse smiled silently. ;)

With kind regards
Marlowe

I don't know whether this story was taken from an episode about Harrison Gray, but I do know it's in a book.

I forgot whether it's in Sj Simon "Why you lose at bridge" or Cut for partners" (Mrs Guggenheim reffering to Unlucky Expert), or, perhaps, one of Victor Mollo's books about Bridge in the menagerie, but it's for sure in one of these books.

On the contrary, :o if you divide the masterpoints by the number of times played :( it gives an idea of how you fare against your peers. (Skill etc. are relative as the comparison base has a VERY wide range) :)

This seems accurate, I have 0 points and played many times so you know my skill :P
