Has anyone tried this?

1♣ = 11-13 balanced or any 17+
1♦ = 10-16 with 4+ ♥s
1♥ = 10-16 with 4+ ♠s
1♠ = 10-16 with 4+ ♦s, no major
1NT = 14-16 balanced
2♣ = 10-16 with 6+ ♣s, no major

It's intended to be less aggressive than "normal" moscito.

Seem to remember Klinger doing something similar but putting 14-16 single suiters into the 1C opener, not quite sure how that would work.

Not sure if the considerations for 10-16 openers are the same as for 9-14.

Hello david_c

I must be getting older. I used to play a 'Two Up and Two Down' Precision variant with a 9-13 base and a 14+ 1C* in first and second seat and a 13-17 base and
18+ in 3rd and 4th.

Now I play 1C=16+ unbalanced or 18+ balanced. I have also just 'moved' some 'difficult' 16(-)HCP hands 'back' into the 10+-16(-) base.

My experience with a great many ranges is that 'whatever' works for you is the best choice. At one time I opened 8-10HCP NTs and I quickly gave the idea up.
It was a fun system bid, however, you still had to take seven tricks to go plus.

Meckwell plays a 10-15HCP base and frequently 'upgrades' hand with less than 10HCP into an opening bid. They are a world class pair with a base quite close to your proposed methods. They might play a 14-16HCP 1NT opening.

The outline 'looks' something like one of the Scandinavian type systems. They do well with their methods using a split range 1C* opening.

Regards,
Robert

The bigger range makes the limited openings less good, especially more difficult for responder. Dunno what the response scheme is (are 2/1's forcing, do you play relays,...), but probably step 1 as inv+ relay will make it difficult. I play with my f2f p the normal MOSCITO version which I got from Richard (with little adjustments and extra tweaks), and even now already we sometimes have a difficult decision if our hand is invitational or not.

I don't think this version is a lot less agressive. You open with balanced 11+ hands (with Richard I play good 11+, with my f2f I play good 10+), and unbalanced 10+ hands, probably some good 9's as well. This makes the situation actually the same... However the 1♣ opening is 2-way, the limited openings have a bigger range, so I think it's an inferior system (pure theoretical), but still fun ofcourse.

Playing this when vul and normal moskito when non vul might be a good idea.

Why?

1. The more red we are (redest is when we are vul and they are not) the more we want our 1nt to be strong, the less red we want it to be weak.
2. The more white (whitest is when we are non vul and they are vul) we are the less chance for them to interept our 1C, because they have less to gain and we have less to lose, therefore 1C 15+ is better the more we are white, when red they have more to gain by interapting and therefore, we need the weak varient to protect us(they might have game so they should act crazily) and the stronger version to be stronger(17+).
3. The more we are white the more we want our 1 limit 1 level to be agreressive and light.

Oh, I probably got it wrong, it was supposed to be about one point sounder than moscito for the unbalanced hands, or even a little more. I should have written (10)11-16 perhaps.

Playing more constructive openings, I suppose you might want to use step 1 as a weak relay (ie. forcing NT type) rather than a strong relay. But no, I haven't really thought this through

Ron Klinger and Bruce Neill play a very similar idea and have had a high degree of success.

Below is their convention card from the Seniors BowL

http://www.ecatsbridge.com/documents/files...neill+notes.pdf

This current version has the club hands in with the 1C opening but most previous versions had 2C as single suited clubs or weak both majors.
