Scoring: IMP

All play 2/1

P---1--P--1
P---2--P--P
2--3--P--3
P---5

South lead J, to Q,K,A. East played Ax, ruff South's return, run clubs --- south 'had to' duck , contract made +1.

Many strange things happened in this board.

1. With his 8-card-major, north did not open.
2. East made a reverse with his 3-card-suit.
3. West passed his pd's reverse.
4. North balanced after Wast passed his pd's reverse
5. South did not double.

Who is the oddest fish?

What do you want east to bid at his second turn? 2 is not a strange call at all.

Reverse is 200% forcing. And I agree with Todd, 2 is OK.

On a strangeness scale from 0 to 100:

1. With his 8-card-major, north did not open.
80 - strange but I have seen it before

2. East made a reverse with his 3-card-suit.
10 - completely normal, I give ten points for the strangeness of the system, not of the call.

3. West passed his pd's reverse.
100 - impossible call, certainly if you have your values

4. North balanced after Wast passed his pd's reverse
20 - Actually, I might have done this. Some people respond to a non-forcing 1 with zero HCPs, then pass a forcing bid. So it might still be our board

5. South did not double.
0 - pass is straight forward.

1) North plays a deep game,
it sometimes works, not for me,
but sometimes against me
2) If it is partnership style fine,
I prefer 3C
3) Pass is not strange, it is dump
4) Bal. after responder passed
openers reverse is also not
strange, just dumb
5) Playing with a bright partner and
playing against one (West), why
should he double?

1. With his 8-card-major, north did not open.

Terrible call, but some will do this.

2. East made a reverse with his 3-card-suit.

The best lie - no problem.

3. West passed his pd's reverse.

Terrible - the worst call of a bizarre auction.

4. North balanced after Wast passed his pd's reverse

Bad judgment.

5. South did not double.

This is fine - I would have passed too.

Was this auction chemically enhanced? ;)

I can justify almost any of the bids, however, the "worst" call is clearly the decision to pass a reverse with a fairly good hand...

The decision to balance at IMPS, RED, after the reverse was passed is also rather dubious. Doesn't look like a particular strong table...

Well the worst "partnership" call is to pass partner's forcing bid of course. You just don't.

Correct. Only two bids really stood out here as horrible, the first was pass of a forcing bid by WEST. Passing twice as north doesn't seem normal to me, but at least I can understand that bid. But after passing twice he has endplayed himself. At no other table will the contact be 2, as his hand would open a lot of hearts. To pass now is too risky. So Norht had endplayed himself with his nonstandard early bids.

The final odd bid (really, suspeciously odd) was EAST jump to 5C opposite a partner who would pass a forcing bid. I mean how in the world can you catch partner with KQ-fifth in spades on this auction> This pass has to be some kind of cry of weakness that 1 was on a bust with no club fit at all. I find it strange this bid wasn't in the list of odd actions in the original post.

I will say North was the oddest fish. Of course, passing the reverse was WAY worse, but passing first with a preempt hand due to some "Flaw" is something occasionally advocated by otherwise entirely reasonable players, and thus there is a bigger danger that it might get imitated ;) :)

N is the oddest fish, without any doubt.
He decided to swing, not showing his pre-empt either on the 1st or on the 2nd round of bidding. Then, when an "impossible" 2 contract comes back to him, he suddenly decides it is time to show his hearts????

This hand is something out of Bridge Menagerie :)
