The conclusion is that:

1) the jump to 3S would have avoided altogether the problem
2) pard does not have a penalty double.

I would have bid 3 first time around.
Now I have to pass, I have 3 tricks in 2 suits and pd doubles for penalty, probably a more corperative double imo, but anyway

Obviously, my pd needs a few lessons about penalty doubles opposite a minimum pd and also some defending lessons.

My conclusion is that partner led the Q, can't see any otherr way of making this contract.

You are on the lead so it's not very likely that the opening lead was Q

The defense slipped because a few high cards were cashed before forcing declarer on spades.

Still, I don't really agree with QJ8x not being a good "penalty double". I think it's a reasonable penalty double. Because of the following reasons:

1. Clubs were bid and supported. Unless opponents are joking, they rate to have at least a half-decent fit. (These particular opponents were aggressive but not reckless.)

2. Other than the marginal spade fit, the rest of the hand looks like doesn't fit very well (heart misfit, minor honors in diamonds, wastage in clubs...).

3. If you're willing to wait until you have QJT9x or KQJT to make a "good penalty double", you better take a chair and sit down, because you're going to wait a LOT of time for that holding in opps suit :D

To me the conclusion is bid what your hand is worth (3) and THEN think about yielding the axe.

]INTERESTING (this is after I voted to PASS the X for sake of partnership harmony) and after reading this post :P

I DISAGREE with the first comment that 'jump to 3[sp] would have avoided the problem' BECAUSE I assume P can bid 1[sp] with only 4 of them :P ??

1. I have shown 5[he] and 4[sp] AND less than 16 points (like NOT a forcing bid at my second chance?)

2. PARD has shown 6+ points and initally ONLY 4[sp] right?? :P

3. AFTER I show 4 card [sp] support --Partner decides to DOUBLE for penalty NOT bid 3[sp]??

4. WHY SHOULD I bid again on what I have in MY hand --- MAYBE partner should NOT double for penalties UNLESS he/she has REALLY GREAT cards in trump suit ??

BUT that's another discussion I have to have with partner -- but NOT specific to THIS hand :D

Pass seems clear with three tricks in my own hand. The void is not a problem for me, as partner probably expects it. In a situation where avoiding disaster was paramount (e.g., a short match against a weak team), I might pull, but even then I'd go for 3.

2S is one of the grossest underbids I've seen. That being said, I am glad I did it because I will confidently pass this X. I trust my partner, and when he Xs them after they have bid and raised a suit, he has trumps. I have AK A in the suit we did not bid and raise, and I will happily pass. I expect a big number, and consider a pull here an insult.

Totally agree.

Partner's bid screams that he has both 4 poor spades and 4 or more goodish clubs.

I'd expect this hand.

Pass and expect to beat it 2 tricks.

Boy, do I ever agree with this assessment (just less than an invitational hand with good trump tricks) pass and expect a good result.
