A friend has not been able to log in since the latest auto-update (I think it was the version with GIB, speech and Finnish translation etc). He is using Win95 and Netscape. The BBO program crashes just after the welcome voice with an error:

This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down.
Details:NETBRIDGEVU caused an invalid page fault in module ...

I suggested him to install setup.msi and to give a newer test version a try, although these do not seem very likely cures to me. (I haven't heard if these worked yet.) But maybe someone could already tell, what's wrong and how to solve it?
I just discovered a truly remarkable bidding system!
Sadly, this margin was too small to contain it.

Hi,

I have just been trying to setup BBO on an old Win 95 laptop and have encountered the same problem. Did you ever find a solution? Is there anywhere that I can get an older version of BBO from to try? I will email support and post back here if I have any joy.

Jonathan

P.S. I have tried the latest beta release but it has the same problem.

P.P.S. After quite a bit of effort I managed to locate and install an old version of BBO (3.8.4) just to find that I am not allowed to login because the software is out of date!

You can try two things (I have emailed this link to Fred and he'll correct me if i'm wrong)

- install the latest beta from
http://forums.bridge...showtopic=11132
and add

[SYSTEM]
BROWSER_TYPE=E

to c:\bridge base online\bbover.ini after installation

- upgrade Internet Explorer

There may be a simpler answer and FG will post it here, i'm sure, if it exists

The first thing you should try is to update the version of Internet Explorer that is installed on your PC. The problem you report is known to happen if your version of Internet Explorer is 4.0 or earlier.

Don't just do this "for BBO's sake" - there are other reasons why it is a bad idea to have such an old version of this program.

If that doesn't work or if you are not feeling inclined to try, you can edit a file named bbover.ini in BBO's home folder (probably c:\bridge base online). Add the following at the end of the file:

[SYSTEM]
BROWSER_TYPE=A

Uday's suggestion of BROWSER_TYPE=E will also work, but using A instead has various advantages.

If you continue to have trouble with this you can e-mail me: fred@bridgebase.com

Please do not send me Forums mail messages or BBO mail messages concerning technical support issues (or anything else for that matter).

Note, the

[SYSTEM]
BROWSER_TYPE=A

only works with beta 4.5.2 (current beta) or later

Thank you both for your help. I have now installed a later version of Internet Explorer and as predicted all is now working.

Much appreciated.

For the friend the solution was to buy a new laptop. It was a very effective yet expensive way to solve it. Well, I guess he had other motives for the investment besides this. :angry:

Hi,

BBO has been working fine for the last few months but with the latest release I am back to having the problems previously described. I have IE 5 installed and have adjusted the file as suggested but neither has fixed the problem.

At the moment I am still able to use 4.5.2 but I expect at some point soon this will no longer be the case so any suggestions as to how I might be able to fix the problem would be much appreciated.

Many thanks,

Jonathan Lillycrop
