Usually I would expect RHO to have nothing in S for his bid in front of me. Thus the outstanding spade cards are on my left (bad) or with pard (good). If he has them, he will find a bid over my somewhat timid 2S. If he doesn't, then we may not go down (too much) in 2........btw, xxx take tricks only when they are trump unless HHHxx are behind them.

:D Oh this looks familiar. However, I think its good taste to mention the other thread where this hand came from.

If it spurs a discussion about what a 2♠ call looks like in competition, so much the better :)

2♠ - close. Give me some spade intermediates and I'll make the mild overbid of 3♠.

I am wondering whether the concerns over the suit quality are really adequate for a suit headed by AK. I think KQJ753 would be considered good enough suit quality by almost everyone. However, the chance to play to play that for one loser opposite a singleton are only fractionally better.

Of course, KQJ753 has much higher ODR than AKxxxx. So let's say it has higher suit quality for competitve or preempt purposes. But to me it looks like the hand is ours, and so we should think constructively, where the difference between these two holding seems marginal to me.

Does this make sense at all?

I somewhat agree with Chamaco. I would open 1♠ with AKxxx Ax xxx xx and I agree that an immediate 2♠/2♥ would show something extra, as this hand has. Better suit quality would make it worth 3♠. Just mho.
I'd rather have a bottle in front of me than a frontal lobotomy - but it might improve my bridge.

I'm one of the few that picked a close 3♠. I would like better suit quality, but you can't have it all. My hand is very strong.

A bit of blatant self-pimping - I've got a new poker book that's getting good reviews.

wheneve peopel find it close they tend to underbid.

hmm I was always taught if it's close then overbid :D It's more fun that way too.

Sorry for bringing up once again my fav gadget: however, a 2N lebensohl, forcing 3 ♣ would solve everything.
Now, 2♠ is 6 cards, minimum; 3 ♠ is a full-fledged reverse; and finally 2N-3♣-3♠ is something in between. This hand.

I care about the friends I have made on BBO. Also, I am extremely concerned about the environment/ ecology/ wildlife/ the little planet that we call Earth. How much more of the world's habitat and food supply for animals do we plan on destroying. How many more wetlands are we going to drain, fill, and build on? How many more sand dunes are we going to knock down in the interests of high-rise hotels or luxury homes?

close 3S rebid, nonforcing, for me,
5 adjusted loser count, all aces
seems to be too good for simple 2S rebid with 7 controls
so shoot me

Anyway, I also think this hand is depending on your opening style, whenyou can have 10 HCP and rebid 2♠ it becomesobvious you should bid 3 with this one.

No, I would not jump holding KQJxxx UNLESS holding substantal extras in power or shape in the side suits compared to the original posted hand.

(Basically , I would jump with a 5-5.5 losers hand, but never with a 6 losers hand such as the original posted.)

Back to suit quality.
KQJxxx has 1 SURE loser and potentially 2.

AKJxxx or AKT9xx both have good chances to play for no losers and virtually exclude losing 2 tricks in the suit: this makes the suit much stronger (by, say, almost 1 trick), in my opinion.

However, IMO, the same cannot be said for AKxxxx with bad spots.

This is one of the problems with a really light opening style: you have such a huge range that it becomes tempting (obvious?) that you have to jump with this kind of hand. Unfortunately, the light opening bid does not automatically transfer the missing hcp to partner ;) Partner's 1N is the same for the light opener's as it is for the more solid types (altho logically the upper range of 1N goes up, the bottom stays the same, thus compounding the problem).

Light openers tend to ignore the problems caused by the style, but 'standard' methods (including 2/1) already suffer from the effects of the wide range for an opening bid: light openers compound this problem.

I vote for 2S. Pd is still there and he will do the right thing if his hand is not min. If his hand is min 2S rates to be our best contract.

As mike said, if spade is akt9xx, I will switch to 3s.

:) You have a 2.5 spade bid, and RHO allows you to bid just that. WTP.

Has anyone been influenced by the 2♥ bid BTW?
