Why is 3♣ called a bar bid?

We've had all the jokes before on this one
Does GiB play checkback (I seem to recall it doesn't)? If not, why not 2C (or even pass 1NT)!

originally some of the bar bids from 2/1 were where you had a weak 4 card major and six card minor, so the bid at the 3 level was considered a bard bid weak hand with 6 card minor( above) to differentiate from hand where you might be using new minor forcing. thought the hand shown in the diagram doesnt fit the requirements.
also some people used to play 1-2-3 stop as a bar bid....six card major raise, rebid to take space a way(law of total tricks).
there are lot of hands where you have 4 card major and six card minor and weak bid at the 3 level does serve its purposes.
on above hand pass seems more likely, if one were to stretch maybe 2NT.

GIB plays new minor forcing, so 2♣ will ask for 3 cards in spades or shape if not having.

I guess the point you're making is that the bar bid should be a 6-card suit rather than 5, is that it? So with this hand, it should just pass 1NT.
And if the red suits were reversed, it could bid 2♦.

2/1 game force by Max Hardy, and probably Aces Scientific by Bobby Goldman
usually just describes then as weak hands with 4card major and 6 card minor
Hardy when further to describe what he called the Hasty Heart
2-3-2-6 where if you respond 1♥ and partner bids 2♥ and you now bid minor at 3 level its a bar bid also.
as far as red suits reversed 2♦ may not necessarily be better than 1NT we are just down to guessing(which i guess is statistics at to what is best)

I have noticed this week looking at results that this type of hand came up several times,
I only noticed when I was looking at some results.
GIB was 4405 and rebid 3♣ over 1NT rebid
but this time was a little luckier found partner with 3 card support, but on the hands
I saw he had 10hcp so seemed like 1NT would have been just as good of a parking spot.
