Version 1.42 of the BBO web-client is now available. The next time you click the yellow "Play Bridge Now" link on our home page (www.bridgebase.com) you should pick up the new version automatically. You can find out the version number of the web-client you are running by logging in, clicking the blue "Help" button at the top of the web-client, followed by "About BBO" on the menu that appears.

Here is a link to a thread where you can post comments, suggestions, questions, and bug reports that pertain to the BBO web-client:

As usual, we have fixed several bugs in version 1.42, but it is far from unlikely that some new bugs have been introduced as well. So please let us know if you encounter any problems! Feel free to send me e-mail (fred@bridgebase.com) if you prefer not to post publicly, but I will be away from my office and unable to respond to e-mail for about 2 weeks starting on November 23.

Changes in version 1.42 include:

1. New options for table hosts at bridge club tables

- Exclude new members. This option can be set only by table hosts who are not "new members".
- Minimum completion rate (the percentage of boards a player starts that he/she actually finishes). This option be set only by table hosts who have established a board completion rate (by playing some minimal number of boards) and cannot be set to a value higher than the host's actual completion rate.

When a table host has set these options, it is impossible to sit at a table unless the user in question qualifies. Users who do not qualify will see "do not enter" icon will appear on empty seats.

We are hopeful that these new options will make it easier for the nice people out there to find a civilized game in the Main Bridge Club.

2. User "statistics" (currently consisting of whether or not the user is a new member, his board completion rate, and his tourney completion rate - likely more are coming) appear in profiles in various places:

- You can see your own statistics by looking at your own profile
- If you receives an invitation to play, statistics for the player who did the inviting should appear. There are 3 cases:
  • invitation to play in a tournament
  • invitation through "Help me find a game, I have a partner - take us to a table"
  • invitation sent as a result of seat being reserved at a table in a bridge club
- If you try to join/sit a table where permission is required to kibitz/play, the host will see a permission request.
- the "new member" and "board completion" statistics will appear directly in the list
- if the host clicks the name of the player at the left of the list, his/her profile will appear and it will contain statistics

In theory these should be the ONLY circumstances (for now) in which statistics appear in profiles. Our current policy in this area is that a user's statistics are only semi-public knowledge - we display them on a "need to know" basis.

3. The user can now request a list of "interesting tables" to play at (through "Help me find a game").

The tables in this list are selected using an algorithm that considers factors like: friends, country, language, and skill level. If this feature proves to be popular then we will likely make an effort to refine and improve this algorithm. Most of the tables in the list will have "permission required to play".

We are hopeful that this feature will help to satisfy the needs of those of our members who have complained about the ineffectiveness of "show all tables" in the web-client in terms of finding an appropriate table to play at.

4. The default action for clicking on a name in the chat area is that the user's profile is displayed.

There is a new "advanced option" (Options, more options, advanced options) "Click name in chat for profile" that can be switched off in order to restore what was previously the default behavior (that a profile did not pop up when a name in chat was clicked). This option is also available by right-clicking in the chat area.

When you log off, the web-client will remember your preferred setting for this (and many other) options. Make sure you actually click "log off" if you want this to happen - exiting BBO by closing your browser window will not result in your options being saved.

5. Profile popups are now resizable (click and drag one of the borders in order to resize). The only purpose of this feature is to give the user more space for a private chat conversation.

6. You can now dismiss profile popups by hitting the Escape key on your keyboard. This also works for most other popups in the web-client.

7. Version 1.42 is smarter about where it places new profile popups on the screen when other profile popups are already on the screen.

In particular, if you move a "pinned" profile from its original location, new profile popups will not appear on top of the pinned profile (they will appear in the vicinity of the most recent unpinned profile - this location will also be remembered when you log off).

8. Colors changed in some areas to try to make things more consistent. For example, spaces in which you can type are now a very light gray color throughout.

9. Number of logins (as displayed in user profiles) is now expressed by "100+", "200+",...."1000+", "2000+".... instead of as exact numbers for users who have over 100 logins.

10. Performance improvements in various lists. The easiest place to see the difference is to show all full tables in the Main Bridge Club and then try to scroll the list.

I hope you like the changes we have made. Feedback is always welcome so let us know if you have something to say!
