I know 12 points isn't enough for east to bid three clubs here, how many points do you need to bid three clubs and how many clubs? Is three clubs forcing?

What would a double (instead of 3 clubs) show?

First I would ask is my hand more defensive than offensive oriented.

With the ace of clubs and KQ of the enemy suit it screams defense to me. We don't even have a suit agreement..

Partner is a passed hand, I would just Pass 2D now.

I think most people would play that 3C is not forcing. With a hand that wants to force, you have to X first.

To bid 3C, you should believe that 3C is likely on a weighted basis to score better than defending 2D. At MPs, keep in mind -100 is better than -110 but worse than -90, and -200 is really terrible. At IMPs, it's only worth bidding if you think there is a chance that 2D and 3C both make, but it might not need to be 50% because a double part score swing is +5 but -200 vs -90 is only -3 (but if there's a chance of going down doubled a lot in a 3 level contract, that could be a disaster).

Points don't make (or defeat) contracts; tricks do.

There's a popular convention you can play here where 2NT shows a weaker distributional hand with clubs, so that a direct 3♣ promises some extra HCP values. (No doubt someone will chime in about how much they dislike this, but for people who insist on wanting to bid with weak hands like yours, it's worth showing them - Good/Bad 2NT.) But even a direct 3♣ under those conditions isn't forcing.

Many also play that double shows 3 spades, so if you really had a freak hand that wanted to force opposite nearly nothing, you'd need to do something else like cue.

Thanks, I'm pretty sure we would get lost on the good/bad 2NT but good to know about. Actually we do play support double but the advice in an outstanding book I have by David Bird "ten ways to improve your bridge" is that if responder is forced to bid at the 3 level, a double shows strength, not three spades, because responder might only have four spades and a minimum hand. Though in this particular auction, after the takeout double and free bid of 2D, opener can't really have strength if you believe that the 2D bid shows some points, which it might not at my club. Despite playing for 20 years or more, me and my partner are still hazy about when to bid 3 over 2 (as you can see), though getting a bad result on this board and the answers on this thread have helped clarify this in my mind a lot!
