Partner opens 1H with:
A8
AJ10952
KQ96
2
My RH opponent overcalls 2C.
I have:
K1097653
64
5
A94
I doubled on the basis that I have less than 10 points but do want to compete.
My LH opponent bids 3C.
Partner bid 3D.
I bid 3S.
Partner bid 4H.
I regularly mess up hands with a long suit like this and would appreciate guidance on how I should have bid.
Tks

Well, you have 10 Goren points, which was what counted when that "10" was promulgated.

I think you need to show your semi-self-sustaining suit.
X then would suggest something stronger so I'm tempted by a direct 4

Such posts are best made on a PC, where you have the hand diagram tool available (the rectangle with spades/Canadian flag at the end of the control bar).

I disagree. An immediate 2s bid should be game inv at least. X followed by 2s is how you show a 7-9 pt hand with 6+ cards in the suit. I think you bid it correctly. Partner's 3d bid should show a good hand...and they do have that. 4h is probably a bit of a stretch, but holding weak support for partner and a 7 card suit, I'd put it into 4s. Generally, hands play better in the weak hand's suit. The weak hand will generate tricks in their long suit if played in spades, but may be completely useless when played in one of the strong hands suits. The time this is incorrect, is when the strong hand is the equivalent of a 2c opener.

#1 a neg. X on the 2-level promises a certain amount of strength, if the hand is strong enough, depends on the partnership.

#2 there are 2-schools, one - the neg. X only promises spades, i.e. 3D by partner would show add. strength, given that
it is a new suit on the 3 level ... I guess it would be GF, in the given auction the bid was even a "free bid", partner
was not forced to bid.
The 2nd school promises the unbid suits, and if p bids a suit we dont have, we have an idea, what to do.
You should have an understanding, which school you follow.
Looking at the hand, your p, though, that you showed both suits.

#3 Over 3S your p should either Pass 3S or raise 3S to 4S.

There is a reason, why peoble play NFB, but they come with their own baggage.
If you dont play NFB, I think it is common to play a jump to 3S as a spade preempt with 7, ...,
I may be wrong, and I dont really like this treatment, it sometimes gets sprung on me, unaware.

Sometimes the best auction is pass, and see, if you can come in later.

Thanks everyone.
As usual, a variety of thoughtful views.
I like the weak jump to 3 spades answer. I think partner will have at least 1 74% of the time.
Now I need to get partner to agree!

Fwiw I dislike the weak jump here as an agreement. I would pass or stretch to 2, depending on the hand. Here I like 2, hoping we can survive.

I hope it was clear, that I am also not a fan of this, but it gets played, not sure how common it really is.
Someone from North America may chime in.
In my reg. partnership 3S would be a fit jump, ..., also not coming up, but than I am also playing NFB.

And making a forcing 2S bid is also not the worst option, the 7th cards is more than enough compensation.

A free bid at the two level is like a 2/1 playing SAYC, it's forcing but only for one round. I think 2S is reasonable due to the 7th spade. And, as it is almost always better for the weaker hand to play in his suit, if partner continues with 3H, I'd bid 3S, which is not forcing.
